Every aspect of it is top notch but it doesn’t hit me emotionally, so that’s a “negative” to me. Nothing major but it’s what holds it back for me.
Agreed. It never really got under my skin except for some visceral reactions to the visuals. The writing of every character not named Rust or Marty takes off huge marks for me too. But it was beautifully shot and the leads gave it their absolute all.
S1 is one of the best of this decade but not one of the greats overall, imo. First time watching I thought it would be around ep 4/5 but the payoff knocked it out of that league for me
I can get behind that. I realized the other day that I never posted this, but in some ways this show and NP remind me of Donnie Darko and Richard Kelly. Both kind of came out of nowhere to make stunning pieces of work that got critical and cultural acclaim and everyone thought that the voice they showed would mean that we had a new master of their craft starting up. Then they followed that piece with something that was off the wall bananas, in desperate need of editing, and pulled from the same tropes as the first but in an unsatisfying way. Suddenly everyone was questioning if that first story was the only one they had in them, or even worse, just a fluke that isn’t as impressive in hindsight because of their later work. Obviously there are major differences of course, and S3 is better than Kelly’s later projects, but the vibe from the creators and the public strikes me as very similar.
That's a good comparison, although I'd say that now I look back on Donnie Darko with rose-colored lenses to enjoy it knowing that it's a teen angst-y kind of cheesy shallow movie and I don't feel the same for season one of True Detective. I agree with everything else though.
I want to know what's up with Wayne's daughter and if Will's death was an accident. Wonder if adult Julie will make an appearance This show right here You all should watch it
I’d argue that season 3 of the leftovers continues the surreal tone set in season 2, so if you didn’t enjoy that then maybe the show isnt for you. I personally love it though.
It makes me sad that we know absolutely nothing about who the kids actually were. Poor Will especially has gotten the short end of the stick. I’m very curious about Becca. Her either being totally estranged because of what Hays did (but forgot) or being dead and Hays has no idea could both be interesting.
It is kind of a bummer how they (and a lot of the other characters) basically exist only to affect Wayne and Roland's lives. Though, I think it's still better than trying to focus on the bigger picture implications of stuff for four characters, like in season 2. IMDB is far from accurate, but the current cast list for Sunday is interesting, if it's accurate. Mike Ardoin, the kid who Lucy and Will claimed to have been going to play with when they left on that fateful day in 1980, is listed again, but with an older actor. There's a also a Lucy Ardoin listed, played by a younger girl. When Wayne and Roland visit the woman's shelter in 1990 and speak to Shelly, there's a brief shot of a truck outside with "Ardoin Landscaping" on the door. Perhaps after Julie escaped from the pink room, Mike helped her hide. And maybe they did more than just hide, and Lucy Ardoin is their daughter? And lastly, Shelly is credited again, but the only actress playing Julie is the younger version. Maybe Shelly IS Julie? Of course, this should all be taken with a grain of salt, as the final episode list also included Lori as of a few weeks ago, but she is now absent.
I’ve definitely read that theory before, and I think it’s possible. They were SO not subtle with that truck, so unless it’s another hamfisted red herring I’m sure he will end up playing a big part in the end. The whole cast only existing to affect Wayne and Roland is absolutely my biggest issue with the season. They’re all just props and it’s a big, disappointing waste. I would love to get to see Julie and have her talk about her brother in some meaningful way to get closure on them both as actual humans, but who knows what we have time for in the finale.
This time the gardener is the good guy! Pizzolatto loves his red herrings, but this one feels just minor enough to be legitimate. The first two seasons have planted important characters right in front of us very early on as seemingly unimportant details, so it would be very much in keeping with that tradition. Also, Mike dresses up as Luke Skywalker on Halloween, and there are Star Wars figures among the toys they find in the woods.
Just binged this, and it had a profound effect on me, enough to change my avatar. S3 is more like S2 than it is S1, so if you liked International Assassin (one of the best hours in television IMO) i'd stick with S3.
I feel like I need to leave this thread for a while. I’ve somehow avoided every single possible spoiler about The Leftovers and I’m afraid of ruining that!
It’s cool that so many people are looking into new info on the show and coming up with theories, but am I the only one who feels like digging through IMDb to find clues taints the viewing experience of a season finale? Just to be clear, not ragging on anybody for enjoying the IMDb search aspect, just curious if I’m alone.
I was bummed that they tipped their hand having Michael Rooker's name in the credits of this last episode! I know we did hear his voice, but I would have gone nuts when he showed up if it had been a surprise.
His picture spoiled the surprise even sooner! It’s very cool that he’s in it for such a short time but an important role though.
Even if the finale doesn’t answer any questions or worse leaves us wit more, I’ve been really enjoying this season. Looking forward to tomorrow.
