Honestly if I didn’t look up things outside of the show itself I probably wouldn’t give it a second thought. Talking about the show is much more interesting than watching it to me. It probably would just go in one ear and out the other if I didn’t try to stay up on the discussion around it. It sucks that the creator and a lot of the fanbase makes that less enjoyable though. If the only place I had to talk about it was reddit I probably would have just stopped watching totally.
Do you post about it on reddit now? Or mainly just here? I think it's fun to discuss shows and theories, but in a specific situation it can detract from my enjoyment of the show.
No, I just lurk over there. Some of the posts are fun and point out things I wouldn’t have noticed, but it’s one of the most toxic subreddits I’ve seen and they all seem to think that every season is flawless and NP is a genius, so I wouldn’t dare get involved in that world.
I could definitely see it being pretty toxic. Like, I love the first season and this season has been great so far, but I don't even know if I'd put it in my top ten or twenty show list or whatever if I made one. First season might be top twenty, idk, so I wouldn't fit in over there. Hmm, maybe that's why I don't really care about the plot this season either, haha
I identify with this VERY strongly, ha. Season one was very good and definitely worth a watch, but if I’ve seen one comment over there of, “S1 was the greatest season of television ever aired and perfect in every way,” I’ve seen a hundred, and every single one is laughable.
Mad Men and Twin Peaks, without a doubt. Then most of stuff like Lost, The Leftovers, Six Feet Under, maybe a season or two of The Wire and Breaking Bad. Those are off the top of my head, so I could be missing some. And I'm not including any comedic shows. If I could split every show into just one season at a time, it could be top twenty for me. You?
I also love Parenthood, as cheesy and melodramatic as it is. I think I'm just in love with Peter Krause, but c'mon, who isn't?
I mean probably countless ones honestly. I really liked it, but it had some pretty big flaws. Just on HBO I’d go for The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and for a much more direct comparison, Sharp Objects. I still need to watch The Leftovers too, so that may get added to my top tier list later.
is the payoff of the Leftovers worth it? I binged seasons 1 and 2 in like 4 days and was captivated the entire time, but after episode 1 of S3 i felt bored and haven't returned to it. I know I will eventually get around to finishing it, but at this point I'm just worried that I'll think the ending is disappointing lol
HBO has had some great one off seasons. Sharp Object and The Night Of are both recently good/great ones.
If I branch out into other networks or genres my list may never end. Lol. So many favorites! I know we disagree on Mad Men but I co-sign Twin Peaks and Lost for sure. BB too. I’m binging The Americans right now and that is rapidly climbing my all-time list as well.
interesting. I'd go w Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Wire, The Sopranos, and the Leftovers too. I'd add Peaky Blinders and the Knick. Night Of was great and in that realm for me too. S1 of true detective is one of the best seasons of TV I've ever seen. I'd put it up against S3 of the Leftovers as the most moving TV I've experienced in my adult life. That said, I knew nothing of the character that is NP while watching it which definitely helped.
Damn, forgot about how great Rectify was too. That's a good'n. I've watched about half the first season of The Americans and one day it's going to click with me and I'll pile drive through the whole thing.
Something about The Night Of was really upsetting and offputting to me, so I gave up when it came out. I don’t know if trying it again since I’m in a different mindset might make it easier now.
If violence against woman and/or minorities, as well as all the awful issues of the prison system, gets to you in a really upsetting way, then I totally understand. It's a brutal, brutal show. Great performances though.
Please do so when I’m done someone will want to talk to me about it!! I haven’t been so captivated by characters so quickly in a long time. Some of the episodes have made me feel more strongly than just about anything, probably up there with Six Feet Under in terms of bringing out different emotions and hoping so hard for the people I’m watching.
Yeah, I blocked out some of the details but it was just way too painful and infuriating to be what I wanted to watch when I tried. I guess that makes me “picky”.
I don't watch a large amount of TV, but TD Season 1 is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. It really does feel like a long movie to me.
