I took the car scene in a completely different way, I thought he was just humouring him by looking and he had just assumed it was another incident that could be accounted for by his dementia. Then when he actually saw the car it was a realisation that he wasn’t imagining it. I also feel like the license plate is significant as they showed it very clearly and lingered on it just enough for the viewer to read it.

Is there confirmation that Ep 8 is 75 minutes long versus 60 minutes? I heard a rumor. Hope it’s true.

According to the schedule on HBO's website, it is 76 minutes long.

make the finale 3 hours long.

this has been so good from every aspect. especially the acting and directing.

the collider interview with Daniel Sackheim was a great read. He seemed so giddy about joining this season and it shows a lot

That theory reminds me of the crappy "horror" film "The Tall Man". Basically something (turns out to be SOMEONE) was believed to be abducting children from a poor Canadian town. The basic premise makes it seem like a supernatural occurrence. In reality, a group of people are secretly working to rescue children from their dire economic/educational/family environment and placing them with better, wealthier families.

I was just reading back over an article listing all of the questions that are still out there that need to be resolved in the last episode. I had two big takeaways from the article. The first was that there is no possible way anything remotely close to all of these dangling threads are going to be addressed, and honestly I am fine with that one. The second big takeaway for me was that I do think it is strange the sheer amount of stuff they just didn't tell us seemingly for no real reason. Just leaving details out is not mystery, it's just kind of annoying. Things like what ultimately happened to Amelia, where Hays' daughter Rebecca is, how we didn't find out Hays' son was a cop / detective also until way into the season, etc. Also - and this one is a completely trivial annoyance that really doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things but it bothered the hell out of me - but I HATED the way they purposely made Woodard's bag of guns look like a body. I think cause it was just us the audience seeing the shot, it's not like someone in the show saw him struggling with a heavy bag kinda far off and could've mistook guns in a bag for a body, and then we had to wait until the next episode for it to be resolved. Even though there was no way in hell Woodard ever did the crime.

I realize that was a lot of bitching, but I also want to add that I think no matter how this last episode turns out that this season is a worthy successor to Season 1.

That’s a huge part of why I’m not thrilled with the season so far. Seeing the reaction of, “Duuuhhhh it’s not meant to be simple, you don’t need every question answered, go back to watching network TV,” is infuriating.

The plot isn’t dense and complicated and challenging naturally, it’s intentionally meant to tease and taunt people into asking questions and making bold theories and then makes fun of those who do.

There are so many characters and stories that could have been either left out entirely or made to be more about the people themselves, but they wrote or shot it in a way to make it all seem mysterious. If they want to just go for a full on character study where the case doesn’t matter at all, this isn’t the way to do it.

Right now we’re stuck in between an intricate mystery that requires tons of thought to solve and a straight drama about people and who they are, and straddling the line makes both less successful. Especially when half the cast at this point has literally no purpose except to further the case or plot for Hays. They could have explored these characters so much more in the same period of time if they weren’t leading us down false paths constantly, and it’s disappointing.

Strange theory I've been toying with is that Rebecca died at some point and they go along with Wayne thinking she lives far away so that he doesn't have to constantly relive the pain of finding out she's dead.

I thought this immediately as well, with the uncomfortable/pained look Wayne’s son and wife exchanged when he asked where she was.

I'm happy if the rumor is true that the finale is 76 minutes, but I could honestly go for a two hour, feature length season finale. I'm not ready to say goodbye to Hays and West, even though I do think EASheartsVinyl's criticisms are all pretty valid.

I could definitely see that being the case. I'm also pretty convinced Amelia has been dead for far longer than Wayne remembers. That might be why it's only him dropping Becca off at college in what is presumably around 2000.

There are a ton of loose threads still hanging, so who knows just how many of them they can reconcile in one (slightly longer) episode. I hate to draw another season 1 parallel, but I think certain parts of this season's resolution will be a little more satisfying. Cohle and Hart got to catch Childress and stop his part in things, but Tuttle was obviously involved, and Rust never got a chance to talk to him while knowing that for certain. 1990 Wayne already knows Hoyt is somehow involved, and he'll get to talk to him in person with that knowledge. Not to mention that maybe we'll get a teeny bit of information about what's transpired in Louisiana since the conclusion of season 1.

Yeah I've been thinking that Amelia may have died as a result of what happened in 1990. It certainly doesn't appear that she ever wrote a second book of any kind, true crime or fiction or otherwise, at least not that I've seen. I may have missed it.

I think Becca might have died in a car accident at the hands of Hays. Perhaps the blunt trauma head injury is what resulted in his dementia

I want it to end on the first season finale ever to have the main character die of spontaneous combustion and piss everyone off.

    That would be hilarious.

perhaps this is also how Amelia died...

Was it inferred that Wayne had a bit of a drinking problem?

I think my ideal would have been straight drama / character study that just so happens to involve a child disappearance case unfolding in the wings so to speak. The whole 'just not telling the audience things' style of storytelling is easily my least favorite aspect of this season.

I think building up and putting effort into a narrative of needing specifically 'this or that answered or it's a failure' really disrupts and harms peoples' enjoyment of a movie or show.

And I'm not saying any ending is good or whatever, but that just feels so binary to me that it's like, why watch anything if that's how you view art?

I'm not pointing this at anyone in particular and saying "you are wrong" or anything, just thinking out loud.
