Really really enjoyed Force Majeure, was pretty meh on The Square (but have been meaning to give it a rewatch)

Winning the Palm D'or pretty much makes this a, "watch as song as possible" for me, but still feel kinda meh on it.

yeah, i enjoyed most of it. not a subtle movie at all. third act would've completely lost me were it not for one character

Yeah wish it were a little more subtle, one things were more "harmonious" on the island it got better.

Really enjoyed the actual ending overall. There's a "vibe" that I don't really know how to describe that Östlund always gets in his movies that I go nuts for even though I'm never really a particular fan of his scripts.

Just read a few reviews. I get the lack of subtly criticisms, but for the most part, it didn't bother me. The conversations with Captain Woody and the Russian billionaire were the only part where I found it a little tiresome. The movie was at its best when it wasn't directly discussing one ideology over another, but rather examining currency as a construct in general.

Interesting, because those were actually the parts that I liked, the lack of subtlety for me that I didn't like was the first section on the island, basically until after the stolen pretzel sticks. I thought the gag with making the staff "go for a swim" was the perfect balance and the funniest bit in the movie.

I read the Ruben Ostlund interview where he talked about currency before the movie so that was a main theme on my mind throughout the film

Oh I loved the "go for a swim" bit too. The interactions with the crew and guests throughout the yacht sequence are delightfully cringe-worthy. Overall, I absolutely loved this. But during certain parts of the conversation between Woody and the Russian, it felt a little bit too much like the film was stopping itself to tell me about the opposing ideologies at work. Even so, I loved the "quote" battle, the drinking game, and the hijacking of the loudspeaker. It was really when Woody was going on about how he's a "bad socialist" and things like that were where I was taken out it the film for a bit. And while that's happening, there are a million different vomit and shit gags happening, which pretty much all landed and kept me onboard (excuse the pun).

Interesting movie. Pacing was a little slack in Part 3 for my tastes, but I did really love the cinematography.

Didn’t like this at all. Feels a little like this years Dont Look Up, really on the nose satire that just doesn’t work for me. I kind of detested the 3 act structure. Admittedly I struggle with satire especially in a modern context. The Buñuel films from the 60s/70s are kind of the sweet spot, funnier and more absurdist. Sadly a miss.

I disagree with the Don't Look Up comparison. Yes, neither is particularly subtle, but DLU felt like it was talking down to and chastising the audience whereas this felt like it was trying to have a discussion with the audience about our weird little social constructs.

really want to see this, but the DLU comparisons have me a little cautious

It's on the nose, but unlike DLU, it actually feels necessary. That and it's well acted, well shot, and the note it ends on is really strong.

It’s definitely the better of the 2 films, I’ll give it that.

Liked this a lot more than DLU. It was little too long and probably my least favorite of Ostlund's films, but I'll be thinking about this for a bit and will definitely revisit it in the future.

I absolutely loved this, my favourite thing I've seen from him for sure although this makes me want to try The Square again because I wasn't really into that at all when it came out but I also can't really remember it very well.

I still haven't seen Don't Look Up but none of this reminded me of what I thought that film would be like at all. Seeing this get compared to it makes me more curious about that film lol.
