Recently I was able to connect with Santa Cruz, California beach rock band, Trestles, to discuss their slick new single/video that recently released, called ”Bones.” Trestles are gearing up for the release of their sophomore full-length record called SALT, that will be released on September 26th. If you’re enjoying the interview, please consider streaming the band’s music here, or catch a show on their tour.

Thanks for your time today! I understand you’re from California, which has a great music scene. What do you like best about where you’re from?

We love the musical history of California. A lot of what we’re trying to do, sonically, is very influenced by surf music and 60s west coast garage. There‘s also a great signature visual aesthetic that comes from that era of California that is intrinsically tied to that type of music. We’re really into paying homage to everything that came out of that era of Californian culture with everything we do artistically.

Your new single, “Bones”, has a great vibe for the summertime. What went into the writing and recording process for your latest song?

All of the songs on our new album SALT were written during my time working as a lifeguard at Capitola beach during the summer. It’s definitely a very summer sounding album because of that. We aim to sound like the beach even in the artsier songs like Bones, and everyone knows the beach is best enjoyed in the summer.

You have a new record coming out, called SALT, as you mentioned. What was the easiest song to write vs. the hardest one?

We have a silly surf punk song in the back half of the record called “The Race is Run” which was by far the easiest to write. I’m pretty sure we made it in under an hour. The hardest song to finish was a tune called “Esplanade.” It’s easily the most complicated arrangement we’ve ever attempted as a band. We still haven’t totally figured out how to play it live because of how many different instruments we put on that song.

On SALT, there is a song called “Point Break (1991).” What connections and/or significance to the cult classic movie do you find on this track?

I had been looking at a t-shirt that I found quite funny that said something to the effect of “I’d rather be watching Point Break (1991) starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze”, and it seeped into my dreams that night. I ended up dreaming that I wrote a hit song titled “Point Break (1991)” so when I woke up I made that song. It’s not exactly about the movie, but it is about not fully in control of your situation without surrendering to fear. It’s quite in line with Patrick Swayze’s character Bodhi’s outlook on life so the title ended up making sense anyway.

How would you describe each of the band members’ personalities? Do those “personas” change when you’re performing?

We’re all pretty different besides our shared interest in music. Malena’s pretty outgoing, while Jackson’s kinda quiet and reserved. Hunter tries to be a beach guy, while Sophia has more Bay Area vibes. We all spend enough time together that we act like siblings though. We’ll try to push each other’s buttons in the van, then come back together for show time. I think anyone can see that deep down we really love each other when we play though. It’s easy to get along when you know you sound good together.
