Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross sat down with IndieWire to talk about scoring films and the state of the music industry: “What we’re looking for [from film] is the collaborative experience with interesting people. We haven’t gotten that from the music world necessarily, for our own choice,” Reznor said. “You mentioned disillusionment with the music world? Yes. The culture of the music world sucks. That’s another conversation, but what technology has done to disrupt the music business in terms of not only how people listen to music but the value they place on it is defeating. I’m not saying that as an old man yelling at clouds, but as a music lover who grew up where music was the main thing. Music [now] feels largely relegated to something that happens in the background or while you’re doing something else. That’s a long, bitter story.” more Not all embedded content is displayed here. He's not wrong, aside from us hardcore music fans it's just such a secondary media consumption habit at this point. Something to put on in the background while you scroll through your phone, work or hang with friends. Not that's there is anything wrong with those behaviors persay but it does ruin engagement with slightly left-of-center/abrasive music forms.
"I’m not saying that as an old man yelling at clouds, but as a music lover who grew up where music was the main thing" ... sounds exactly like something an old man yelling at the clouds would say. good music is relative and if you actually like music, there is so much out there and it can be the main thing. there will and always has been passive listeners. i do agree it is devalued by streaming services though. forever looking for someone to build my vision of rdio meets bandcamp...
It's cheap or free most of the time. So it is devalued. We don't have to put as much time, money or commitment to listen to "our music". We can stream or download it for free and listen whenever we want. I love the accessibility of music now, but that does take away the specialness that it once had.
In case anyone didn't see, they will be scoring Naughty Dog's new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Trailer looked absolutely incredible.
