This album is the definition of mid. Travis is a shockingly boring rapper with absolutely nothing to say. The most interesting tracks on the album are actually 10-year-old Kanye songs. And that's not even going into the pointless Dave Chappelle feature, which is undeniably disgusting.
Yeah, some of the beats and production are cool but I literally have no interest in returning to anything here except the Westside Gunn track. He even does the Kanye screams lol
When the closest you come to addressing the death of 10 people at your festival is a Dave Chapelle spoken word section where he talks about choosing himself and feeling good, you might want to re-evaluate some things. There's also the "I'm loyal bitch, I got Ye over Biden"
Album is fantastic, not sure what most of the members here expect from a rap / hip-hop album, but this is top-tier material. One or two duds for sure (topia twins, k-pop), but this is right up my alley. Best rapping from Travis yet as well as some of the best production from him (albeit there are a lot of older beats and ideas here). In regards to the subject material, travis has literally had on or two tracks per album where he offers some level of relfection or introspection on a personal level. Utopia by far has some of his most introspective lyrics (my eyes, I know, hyaena). Either way not sure if Travis was ever the sort of rapper you would seek out when looking for deep lyrical content.
I actually think Kanye stole/took/borrowed/given most of the shared similarities/sounds from Travis. We know Kanye does not write shit and if you look at the Yeezus, Travis is all over that album from writing to production. My guess is some of these tracks came from DONDA as well as pieces from Yeezus. I feel like most of the credits that Kanye have on here come from samples rather than actual work on this project. This not to absolve either of these two folks but the Kayne stuff is weird because we know Kanye's sessions/production comes from different pieces of other people. The lyrics on here about Kanye are fucking stupid though and this is not trying to give cover to either folks.
Almost done with this is and it’s just boring and sounds stale as hell. This could have come out 5 years ago and felt stale. Also it’s fuck Kanye forever but let’s please not rewrite history and say Kanye stole all his shit from Travis. Just a ridiculously stupid thing to say.
Best take in the thread. I don't know why people are obsessed with his lack of lyrical prowess as if that's the point of his music at all.
I think the idea that for Utopia Trav "ripped off" an album he has significant production credits on is a bunch of horse shit but otherwise it is definitely nonsense to say Kanye ripped him off.
So yeah did not say that but the fact remains that Kanye sessions are giant collaborations and sessions upon sessions that have multiple folks feeding Kanye stuff. Mainly lyrics but also plenty of other things. I mean Kanye's albums have miles long worth of credits compared to every other rapper out there. Not to mention the relationship between Travis and Kanye and they share of ton of the same producers and engineers.
Also if you going to pick out stole from the three other verbs that I used to try and describe a Kanye session while ignoring actual production credits than yeah I am good on this convo, just dumb.
Yeah Travis helped with stuff but you implied that he was more important to those records that Kanye was which just isn’t true. lol it was the first word you used.
It also ignores the three words that come after which is trying to explain how "different" Kanye's sessions are. I think a ton of Kanye's stuff is feed to him from other people, particularly lyrics but also some aspects production. There is no other rapper who has production/writing credit lists as long as him. There is over 10 writer credits and 6 production credits on "I Am a God" alone. And feed to him might not be the best word either because I am sure there is ton of folks who are rushing to help those sessions to be able to work with him.
I do agree with you on this point, they both have aspects of having dated sounding songs. I know in Uzi's case a lot of those are actually old songs not sure with Travis.
The production on Yeezus is nuts but it's Kanye's lyrics and delivery that make it a classic. pretty much all big artist have a list of producers/writers as long as a CVS receipt on their albums these days. Let's not get foolish here.
