If this tour sells out like the last arena tour 5FDP did in the UK.. there's a potential chance they might actually headline Download Festival next summer!
Yeah was going to say earlier, it feels like a huge thread here is that a lot of expensive concerts sell out easily enough, implying that prices could be even higher because supply isn’t meeting demand. Not to say that’s a good thing, but if people are still buying from scalpers at 3x face value for a sold out show, then people are still willing to pay, even if it’s unethical. Maybe that means we need even bigger stadiums for concerts and/or artists should saturate markets with dates so that supply meets demand (I guess Beyoncé did that last year) That being said, don’t some countries have/have proposed some sort of arts subsidy or arts funding for individuals to use? Feels like an under-discussed (but super unlikely) path to easing the blow of awful prices.
I know in England some venues get subsidies but not sure about individuals, honestly if Mamdani made a government diy venue he's mayor for life
Stadium/arena shows were underpriced throughout the 00s as the secondary market exposed. Now I'm seeing most shows at market price, usually via VIP tickets which have a few cheap items to justify them. Most non-arena shows are still accessible for under three figures but, yeah, arenas/stadiums are going to just get more and more out of reach for those without means.
I just realized I went to my first concert 20 years ago today. I dont want to think on how much money I've spent on tickets, but its been fun two decades.
Selling two tickets to Bright Eyes at Red Rocks. Slightly less than face value if anyone is interested. New date is May 12th. Had planned a whole trip for my fiancé since it’s her favorite band and they are playing their most popular albums. So now I’m out an Airbnb reservation and these tickets. Sorry if this isn’t the right place to do this. Just figured I’d ask.
That's not the attitude that people have though... It seems you may have bought into all the TM and live nation bullshit about trying to make concerts a LUXURY, and price the majority of people out of it, as long as they're still making money. If it was up to them, they'd manage 50% of the shows at double the cost and just say 'sorry, music is a rich persons hobby now'. It's not meant to be a luxury, or for the rich, beyond the very narrow definition of all things not necessary being a luxury (which I don't agree with, and isn't a healthy attitude / definition anyway, and it's why people unfairly look down on impoverished people for spending money to get any shred of joy out of life - oh you can barely make ends meet? Fuck you for buying a luxury $40 concert ticket to find relief). Yes - The market value is going to be what people pay for it to a certain degree, but it doesn't mean that that's the fair price. If the alternative is to not go to live music until prices drop, or pay what people are asking, then it's not really a fair game or a fair determination of market value is it? It's holding art and entertainment hostage till somebody blinks. like what? Are you literally just saying that capitalism is cool and you're okay with raising prices forever until my scenario above happens and we all boycott?
Don’t mind Phil, he is always defending the shady ass practices of Live Nation/TM and the dude is obviously a whore to capitalism. This stuff is a bubble that is about to pop so the market will course correct one way or another, but telling people with limited resources that they don’t deserve live music since it’s a “luxury item” is incredibly disingenuous and short sighted. People are just asking for prices to be reasonable and to not have prices driven up by greedy ass industry folks. It’s not that deep.
I certainly understand the emotion behind it and, like I said before, I am empathetic to everyone’s financial needs. However, I would like to point out, that the vast majority of live music is still under three figures. It’s the top 1-2% of artists that usually command these high prices and that’s what I equated to a luxury event,
Thanks? If me pointing out that limited supply and high demand for a non-essential luxury item makes me a “whore to capitalism”’so be it.
Also, genuine question, how do you determine the “fair” price? $40 tickets may not be accessible to certain people. How is that calculated?
