I love MxPx but they aren’t the same level as those other bands. They can happily take a direct support spot.
Nothing exciting. NFG and Simple Plan were supposed to coheadline during Covid. Before the tour #’s started going up so Simple Plan pulled out and was replaced by Less Than Jake. NFG got annoyed they pulled out due to safety but then still performed at Riot Fest and made comments on stage about it.
I’d like to see YC go a slightly punkier route. Maybe take out someone like Alkaline Trio or Bayside.
I’ve always thought a “2000’s pop punk big 4” tour would be a great idea and do solid numbers. But at this point, I don’t think NFG wants to do anything with SP again…
After seeing SP this summer, the only way they would tour with NFG is if NFG opened. SP sold out a 6K venue here. NFG can barely sell out a 1500 cap venue here. SP has gotten much bigger the last few years while NFG has kind of stagnated.
Good Charlotte's also playing second on those giant Danny Whimmer festivals the day they play, they'd assuredly be the act people would see.
You might be on to something with Bayside - Nick and Ryan are already doing a podcast together. I’d be super into that pairing.
It’s funny. If you asked me a decade ago which one had the bigger draw, I’d easily say NFG. But SP has easily had a nostalgia boost the past few years and now they’re playing way bigger venues while NFG has kind of remained the same. It feels like all the big pop punk bands of the early 2000’s (YC, GC, SP, Sum 41) got reboots in popularity this past decade except NFG. I don’t think they’ve dropped in popularity per se, but they’ve been in the same spot as they’ve have been
I think a lot of that is due to the fact that the other 4 tour quite a bit less or in YC’s case went on hiatus. SP had some Tik Tik stuff blow up as well. NFG consistently tours and just does the traditional make albums/tour heavily cycle which I think makes their popularity kind of stay the same.
Imagine if NFG broke up in like 2006 and came back right now instead of just treading water the last two decades
Or if they broke up in 2013 instead of kicking Steve out of the band and they reunited again but without Steve
Steve leaving, while it needed to happen, resulted in NFG being creatively stagnant. They haven’t released anything anyone’s cared about in years.
Wouldn't say the interest in NFG has been particularly less than that in the Simple Plan, Good Charlotte or Sum41 releases in the same period. Based on Billboard chart positions since the peak commercial period of those bands, say end of 06/07, NFG have charted more consistently and higher than those artists - everything up to their last album hit top 40 at least.
I think that has more to do with them having a bigger core fan base. Their consistency has allowed them to stay at that commercial spot but they never really do anything particularly interesting unless you want C tier to maybe AT BEST B-tier NFG songs.
People are acting like pop punk is a mind bending genre. It’s fun but it doesn’t exactly move the needle. There is only so much you can do with it.
This. It’s not like SP, Good Charlotte or Sum 41 are making new music that is actually causing their spike in popularity. Sum 41 had a farewell tour which will always do well. SP hit big with Tik tok and doesn’t tour as often as NFG. GC hardly ever tours which increases interest. Yellowcard is the only one out of all of these bands that has released new music that is increasing interest in them.
Good Charlotte was declining in popularity in 2018. I remember their show in LA got downgraded to a smaller venue. Their time away and rarely touring since has generated a lot of interest in them along with emo nostalgia also factoring in
