IIRC the old Space was the main room, but was all ages and dry, so the Ballroom was the actual moneymaker, ffor better and worse, so it become the spot. I only went to one Ballroom show before moving (Hellogoodbye, one of my first post-vax shows), but had a couple of trips I enjoyed in the old room in high school.

CT has always been a fair stopover for tours between NYC and Boston depending on the scene, like how The Anthrax was the spot for hardcore bands stopping in Norwalk. I'm also sure that there is some combo of 00s/10s indie fans moving down the 95 corridor + people living in CT who would probably have moved to NYC and gone to shows thee a few years back

  2. former AP.net staffer Ryan D and I interviewed TWIABP there I think in 2011 but Ryan did all the work because my dumbass didn't realize I needed to think of questions beforehand. that was the old building

Bridgeport is like...technically NYC area (in the same way that Asbury Park/Holmdel is) as you can take the train there.

I’m grateful that DC is small and dense enough that all the venues/shows are very transit-accessible and not too far away from one another. Plus, Baltimore is not that far away, even if it is a trek without a car sometimes.

Feels like NYC would be such a whiparound to go to shows in. Traveling across boroughs and venues on any given night must make it harder than knowing that most venues will be a similar distance away from you.

When I lived in DC, I did the MARC-Amtrak run to Baltimore a ton and it always totally wiped me out.

Funny that when I lived in Fairfield CT for 3 years we got basically zero good shows. Dashboard & Panic did a coheadliner at the Bridgeport Arena but that was it. Now that arena, amphitheater and Norwalk ballroom get a lot of good stuff.

Although to be fair back then (2006-2009) the metro north ride to Manhattan was significantly faster. Crazy how much slower those trains are now.

The night owls made the timing better, sometimes I can take the Metro home, but those are still tough round trips. Much prefer an Ottobar or Metro run compared to Soundstage, but might end up making those Power Plant treks a few times this fall

New single "Sands of Time" out now!

Pardon my ignorance but is Jelly Roll really not that popular in Mexico? I would've thought he'd be right next to Vampire Weekend on that poster.

Honestly Im actually surprised he was booked for the festival, as country music is not really popular in Mexico. And I don't think his hip hop years were popular in here as well. And on the other hand, Aurora is adored here in Mexico, she played 3 arenas shows in here last year that were sold out months in advance.

We also have the opposite case, where bands that arent as popular in the US or Europe pull big crowds in here, the example Franz Ferdinand being billed 3rd on their day.

That's really interesting. I've always said that the hardest working person in the music industry is Jelly Roll's publicist. This guy is on award shows, random TV shows and a lot of major sporting events. You really can't escape him, unless you're in Mexico apparently.

Nothing of true substance to add other than I also live in DC and enjoy the different venue options and that they are all relatively easy to get to depending on what form of transportation you take.

Agreed and and I would say whoever books tours and does PR for Turnstile gotta be up there with Jelly Roll's publicist as also one of the hardest working people in the music industry as well

Absolutely. If the new album has massive first week numbers, get ready to see them everywhere! Funny enough, going back to Jelly Roll, I played Blue Ridge 2021 with him. He played before Mastodon and Papa Roach at 5pm on the second main stage. The amount of people that were there for that set was astounding! You would think he was the headliner of the festival. At the time, I had never heard of him and thought he was a hometown guy from Virginia. Nope, just insanely popular with that crowd. He was so popular that they had Steve-O do some "questionable" stunts before his set to warm up the crowd. It was a strange weekend haha

I think country music is not as popular here in Mexico as we have regional, corridos and rancheras (and a lot of subgenres of them) which are our equivalent of country.

But Jelly being booked for thisnis proof their publicist and agent will try to make him break in Mexico. Will report back in November on how his set went.
