honestly the fan bases of most newer bands recommended here are people in the 18-25 age range so this problem comes up less often than you'd think

As an older user here I do think about why new bands/music don't really connect with me as much as bands I listened to in my 20s/early 30s...there are some here and there for sure but overall I always find it harder to make the same level of connection

If I went to a show where the age range was 18-25 I would feel very old and uncomfortable lol

Actually when I feel like when I was around 30 I went to a Motion City show and the demo at the show was like teenagers and I don't think I listened to them since bc of how uncomfortable I was there

Lol I've had a couple awkward moments like that. When I was 30 I went solo to a The 1975 show and was surrounded by a sea of high school kids. A pair of kids eventually came up to me and asked if I could buy them beer and that was the moment I realized I shouldn't be there lol

  6. I’m 33 and it’s fun to be the oldest person at a show, watching the kids get excited about a new band that I also love. I hope I never lose that. I get it feeling kind of weird if it’s like a college house show or something (though I knew plenty of older punks who went to those when my friends would throw them in college and they were all cool). But at a venue, I’m never going to feel out of place.

I feel like I experience the opposite. Most of the shows I go to, I feel like I’m the youngest guy in the room lol

  8. I went to see Steve Forbert with my parents last year and I was the youngest person there by literal decades. Also a fun experience.

I'm in the (mosh) pit at 34. Dying by the 3rd song in but I refuse to get old.

I was in a sea of middle-aged white dudes when I went to the Soul Coughing reunion tour last fall

My most awkward moment definetly was Olivia Rodrigo in 2022. Me a latino male in my late 20s surrounded by mostly teenage highschoolers and their parents.

Also The Lumineers at Wrigley Field, I still think I was the only non-white in the whole stadium.

I was mostly kidding. I am fine and don't need to justify liking what I like (to a certain degree). It always makes me sad the young people who notice old people and think that they have to 'age' out of things like concerts. Life's short, go enjoy it. I do get anxiety sometimes especially if I'm at the show alone, but it hasn't stopped me from going.

There are new bands I find that I just can't connect to on a lyrical basis, but if there was a band of teenagers / young adults making kick ass music that I vibe with, you bet I'll go see them, average age of the crowd be damned.

I'm almost 32 and feel the same way. I think it also lets young people know they don't have to stop going to shows when they get "too old" for it because I definitely worried about how I was already running out of time when I was a teenager. Turns out, nobody there cares how old you are as long as you aren't being an asshole

  15. This is how I felt about the whole “party emo” trend that was big for a while. That stuff made me feel like I was aging out of something I loved and it was a huge bummer. Fortunately there has been plenty of other new stuff I love since then.

John // OC now, OH forever.

I’m 42 and ditching my company’s big dinner/party to stand in the back of Anxious/Stateside and shout and point at the stage. Very sure I’ll be one of the oldest there.

I agree to an extent as well that it is fun to seeing the youth getting hyped for bands I loved but also I guess it aids in my transformation of musical taste from my teens to my now 40s

I'm 10 years older than you and I guarantee I'd also be the youngest person at a Soul Coughing show haha

Kinda on the same topic, I went to see Slowdive a couple months ago and it was wild to see the age demographics in that crowd. I guess Tiktok blew them up recently? Because the crowd was a mix of 50 year olds and 16 year olds. Barely any in between lol

Had to stop seeing the Aquabats and Destroy Boys because their audiences started skewing younger and younger. Although in a few years the cycle will be complete when i take my boy to see the Aquabats

New single "Sands of Time" out now!

I'm mid 30s myself and I have an entire stretching routine that I have to do if I'm either performing or standing at a show. To all the youngin's out there: stretching will make things easier!

When I saw Sunny Day Real Estate back in November, I swear 75% of the audience was people early-mid 20’s. Not a lot of older folks in the audience which I thought was intriguing.
