I've been saying for nearly 20 years that I never really understood the point of this SxSw music part. People would argue that bands playing there would get "buzz" but, again, I've never really seen it significantly translate to actual success. Most bands that had "hype" form SxSw already had some internet buzz going into it. It did at least give us that terrible performance from Salem though.

Holy shit!! Very surreal that Will Smith is performing at 3,000 to 5,000 capacity venues in the UK alone!! Tempted to see him in Wolverhampton.. I am surprised he isn't doing arenas but smart business for him doing venues like this and not doing arenas straight away

Will Smith absolutely couldn’t fill an arena in 2025

I agree, he's doing a mixture of festivals, summer outdoor headline circuit shows and proper headline shows, I am just in shock by this.. it would be very interesting what type of venues Will Smith would play when he announces a US tour

As I understood it... It was a spot where industry would go to check out a bunch of "buzz" bands in a single weekend. The 'hype' from SXSW was usually just industry people talking about bands and the showcases being sold out. CMJ was a similar thing, in my experience.

A single SXSW never translated into actual success, I don't think, but in tandem with the existing hype for some bands I'm sure it translated into some pretty major acts over the years if you look back.

CMJ seemed even more pointless to me! A "festival" in a city where there's multiple shows every night of the year to build hype is just...pointless.

South By definitely helped with quite a few artists over the years, you also could see some dope shit for free but by like 2016-17 it got so corporate and all the fun shit was gone mostly. It’s already been scaled back/dead for a minute.

if you look at night 1 in LA on the Ticketmaster seat map, about 30% of the venue is either listed as resale or unsold.

this was not the case with the renaissance tour. these venues will still be packed but it’s absolutely a buyers market on the secondary, and that’s bad for the uber expensive face value tickets yet to be sold.

Dua Lipa's 4 nights at MSG are the same deal. "Sold out" but 40% of the venue is resale.

    The intrusive whisper fascinates me

The only thing about SxWx that I thought was appealing was larger bands playing smaller venues. Never really understood the concept of SxWx otherwise lol

Yeah that was always my question. For like the past 15 years it's been that so how would any small band think they can roll up and get attention.

Both are more of an "industry" thing that, by happenstance of having a lot of live music, also had to function as something for fans as well. And, yeah, many of the shows were pretty shrug-worthy there were still some pretty cool ones that I was able to attend. Because a lot of it was labels putting like, 4-6 of their "current" bands on a single bill which led to some pretty stacked line-ups looking back at it if you were really into the roster of a certain label at a given time...

The Bouncing Souls with Dillinger Four, Strike Anywhere, Avail, None More Black, and the Soviettes. The Letters Organize with A Wilhelm Scream, Crime in Stereo, and No Trigger. Atmosphere with Brother Ali, P.O.S., Boom Bap Project, and Blueprint. Eyeball Records had a showcase with My Chemical Romance and Murder By Death the one year that was really cool. I'm not sure who sponsored it but one year I saw Joan Jett with Andrew W.K. and Juliette Lewis.

But then you also had things that were just like... The Boxcar Racer tour with H2O and the Used. Or Coheed with whoever they were touring with. Good line-ups. But nothing special because it was just the tour.

CMJ had some pretty fun lineups the one year I went while I was working at a college radio station. Can't remember specific lineups but the fact I got to see Car Bomb, Last Chance To Reason, LMFAO, Good Old War, Fake Problems, Ghostface Killah, Brand Nubian, and Powerglove across an entire weekend in 2010 was pretty fun.

This is the first I'm hearing of this Semisonic tour, and I'm quite bummed it's not coming here. Might have to time our annual trip to Missouri to see it...

In a four-day span, Jones Beach will have Live, Collective Soul, Our Lady Peace, Goo Goo Dolls, Dashboard Confessional, The Offspring, Jimmy Eat World, and New Found Glory.

Spread them out a little more, please! (Or just pair them all together.)

  22. But then you’d have Jones Beach Fest 2025, $350+ a ticket and sets overlapping each other. Boooo.
