I thought DFP 8 was the best lineup they did, but ironically was their worst selling year.

Beastie Boys, The Strokes, The Darkness, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Brand New, Cypress Hill, New Found Glory, Taking Back Sunday, Story of the Year and Midtown. Plus Jay Z doing a surprise one song performance.

It was a cool blend of everything that was popular at the time in 2004, but maybe they leaned in a bit too much on the emo scene. In hindsight they should've had at least one more of those "Meet Me in the Bathroom" type bands on the bill, like Interpol or Franz Ferdinand.

Yeah K-Rock NYC was an odd modern rock station. It officially billed as Alternative but from like 99-01 really functioned as more of an Active Rock station. This was due to it being the Howard Stern flagship station so it had more of a male target. Unlike KROQ which had a long history in Southern California and a new wave legacy, K-Rock in NY was pretty much tied to the guitar rock by dudes version of alternative which is why their festivals would hardly ever book softer or female-led bands during nu metal's peak. KROQ also had the benefit of being the most influential alt station in the country and, presumabely, higher production budget so they could do those rotating stages and thus book more acts.

TBH, I think a lot of stations took that route in the nu-metal era. Then dipped back to "Alternative" around 2002. WBCN tried that for like, 3-4 months then flipped back. It was still a very weird time... There was one point in the winter of 2000 where the top 10 of their playlist included like Limp Bizkit, Green Day, Ben Harper, At the Drive-In, the Suicide Machines, and Insane Clown Posse. LOL

I do have to say, as far as KROQ goes, you're spot-on about the "vibes" being different which helps (the warm weather probably helps too). And while production budget for both stations was probably higher than most because of reach and influence... I always wince a bit when talking about these festivals because from what I understand they basically paid artists nothing in contrast to a regular gig and it was all mostly rooted in favors and playlist placement. Just another form of payola.

Yeah, it was a fascinating time if you monitored this stuff. 'BCN, if I reall, was also a Howard Stern station and had a very similar machismo approach but even they tended to play more female artists (I recall seeing a trade add in Radio & Records that Tori Amos "Spark" was a top requested song on their station). The PD of K-Rock essentially thought that his audience was all knuckle-heads so anything too soft of feminine was seen as wimpy.

The payola aspect of it is also fascinating to me. I wonder, like, in 2002 if Incubus and System Of A Down were paid their full fees but like Hoobastank had to play for free. Would love to see the inner workings of those deals.

The important part here is that they dropped Trapt from the tour.

Yeah I remember that was one where they discounted tickets. Lineup would absolutely murder it today even removing Beastie Boys and (likely) Brand New.

I'm not sure how these bands will manage. Trapt was undeniably the biggest draw what-with their sold out arena tours and 77.5 million anti-woke monthly listeners on Spotify or whatever the fuck that guy TruthSocials about.

this is why Spotify monthly listeners don’t matter. They have 4.8M listeners and playing a 290 capacity room in NJ

Surprised at how poorly that Offspring/JEW/NFG tour is doing in MA. There's still "standard" GA pit tickets available and a shocking amount of tickets in every other section as well.

The fact that it starts at 6pm on a Wednesday isn't really helping things, I'm sure but... I wasn't expecting it to look so blue when I opened the seating chart.

Not sure how other dates are doing but I'm wondering if this is a scenario where there's fan overlap but your average person doesn't see the value due to shorter sets, consistent touring from all three bands, only being really into 2/3 of the bands, etc.

Tickets here are just too damn expensive. The middle of the 100 section is decently sold but everything else is hardly sold at all. $182 before fees for 100 level and $100-158 for 200 level is just not affordable for a lot of people who may only like 1 or 2 band of these bands.
