I had never heard of this band but holy shit is this up my alley. Gonna have to keep an eye out for an east coast run.

they have an incredible live presence and genuine momentum. Once ran into a guy in his 60s or 70s in a shirt of theirs two states away. Not necessarily my favorite local band but them & Lator Gator are the two who I’m most certain will blow up outside of Indiana.

Wild! Yeah, this sounds like a mix of Cosmic Joke and Pears. Completely my shit. Haha. I can see this catching on among certain people who are into more melodic hardcore.

Checking out Lator Gator right now too. Into this too for very different reasons. LOL

Expect Later Gator to go semi viral after Fauxchella. Their schtick is during True Blues the guitarist plays with one hand while doing the trumpet part with the other. It’s gonna be on a lot of people’s Instagram stories when they see it for the first time

    Are You Watching Closely?

Simple plan and nfg would have been fun. Have they toured together? I'm too lazy to look

They were supposed to do a co-headliner in 2020 which obviously got cancelled. When it was rescheduled to Fall 2021 Simple Plan eventually dropped off due to travel concerns, replaced by Less Than Jake & Hot Mulligan.

Iirc that led to some bad blood with the NFG camp. Both Simple Plan and NFG ended up playing Riot Fest and I think Jordan said something to the extent of “oh they could travel to play this fest but not the tour they screwed us over on?”

I find it wild that it took until 2020 for Simple Plan and NFG to attempt to tour together. I found it slightly opportunistic on NFG's part as, I imagine, Simple Plan probably tried to tour with them back in the early 00's but I imagine NFG's team felt they weren't "authentic" or whatever due to the scene divide at the time.

for a good portion of simple plan’s heyday they weren’t really in with the rest of those bands. They were seen as a bit uncool, and more pop. It’s only been the last decade they have been lumped in with all those other bands.

Yeah and I imagine they hated that during the 00s. They co-headlined with MxPx in '04 and I remember there were a portion of MxPx fans who were up in arms about it (hilarious in retrospect).

It’s really interesting to me that this was a tour and that it was a co-headliner. Was there a time when MxPx was really huge? Or did Simple Plan dip in popularity that year?

I thought that was during SP’s peak, so them co-headlining was odd to me

I know it seems crazy now but like 2000-2001 mxpx was right there with your good Charlotte, new found glory when you named the big pop punk bands, then everyone else got a lot bigger and mxpx did not.

Yeah I think it was really more out of respect of MxPx's longevity that it was a co-headliner. This was SP's victory lap in the No Pads era and they were clearly the reason it was selling out 3-4k capacity places. Sidenote, openers were great on that tour at least on my leg (Sugarcult, Motion City Soundtrack).

    Things have changed.

MxPx was in a Super Bowl commercial on that album. They were pretty big despite never having a real pop hit.

Good Charlotte and NFG were still openers for major tours in '01. Good Charlotte opened for MxPx and NFG opened for Less Than Jake that very year. Both had moderate radio success on their respective albums that they were promoting that year and then fully crossed over the next year.

That is interesting. I always assumed MxPx was about the same level as say, Pennywise or NOFX, where they had a solid following, but didn’t have a huge amount of mainstream success

They did though I'm not sure how much of a following they still have. All pop-punk bands of that era had a make or break point. MxPx attempted to cross over with their 2000 and 2003 releases but it just never worked out.

responsibility was getting played on mtv a ton, they just didn’t follow it up with another big hit. But i remember discovering them off of that song.

Unsure on timing, they’re on the east coast late August. It’s playing the side stage at a shed in Philly

Came to say this as I was reading. Responsibility got play in the era of monoculture. I remember the song and band being the talk of the blacktop amongst the skaters at school

    It's chaos. Be kind. Prestigious

Appreciate it! Yeah smaller sheds would make a lot of sense especially with that lineup. Time frame also makes it seem like Riot's in play.

In that early 2000s era MxPx was absolutely at the same level as Pennywise and NOFX playing in 800-1.5k capacity rooms depending on the market. Solid HOB headliners. Pennywise and NOFX were able to maintain and grow slowly over time... But a lot of the other bands in that "skate-punk" realm had a dip in popularity and draw due to shifting trends and never really being able to cross over (granted most of them didn't really try all that hard LOL).

For all of those bands, I think the best thing they ever did was realize that not touring the US like, 3-4 times per year would get people way more excited about seeing them when the time came.
