2011 - Had a class in college with a music journalist who ran a big radio show. Last day of class he had us (15-20 students) come to the studio and watch The Arcade Fire record a performance. They were complete divas and pissed off my teacher. Supposed to be an intimate and raw set with a few songs, instead did 1 song like 5 times until they were happy enough with it and then most of the band bailed on the interview. I wasn’t interested in sticking around for the interview so I left and ended up riding in the elevator with the band and their team. I really wanted to call them out but I swallowed my tongue

Dropkick Murphys headlining an ampitheater as part of a radio-sponsored festival in 2003. They played after Good Charlotte, Beck, Jane's Addiction, Jack Johnson.

It was pretty clearly set-up so the "headliner" wasn't necessarily the biggest draw but I think the underestimated how many people cleared out because they basically said "anybody left come on down into the ampitheater and grab a seat."

I know it’s not unusual for these radio shows to mix up the order of who performs, but who thought DKM going on last was a good idea?… That was before they got pretty big, too

It was just as they were getting a lot of traction locally. "Walk Away" was all over the local alt-rock stations with "Dirty Glass" right behind it. They weren't big nationally but they were getting there regionally.

The odd bit is that I'm not sure who else should have closed it out. Jane's Addiction was a "surprise guest" so they played earlier in the day. Beck was at a bit of a commercial low-point (Sea Change). Good Charlotte played after him and before the Murphys (and kept hyping the Murphys up during their set). None of them were ampitheater-level at that point in time.

I wonder if part of it, for the Murphys, was "yeah, we'll play last" and that whole "everybody just come down, fuck security" bit that the radio DJ announcing them did was all planned as a way to mask the fact that they didn't land the strongest of headliners?

That year was so weird. I looked at the line-up again and the side stage was the Dresden Dolls, (hed)p.e., Hot Hot Heat, Interpol, the Ataris, and Finch. In that order. LOL

I saw Phoebe Bridgers in early 2016 at a free show where maybe 50 people total showed up. Pretty nuts.

I’ve been seeing this all over Reddit. I know this band notoriously has wild shows, but this is just nuts

I saw Kanye with Kendrick Lamar opening at an arena where I bought 300 seats and they upgraded me to the 100’s because they didn’t sell enough. 30k+ arena and maybe brought out like 10k. Not as drastic as some but still a big hit

Reminds me of the time I witnessed Finch get absolutely DESTROYED (fight w/ guitars being used as weapons) by Disturbed in front of the audience at Rolling Rock Fest in PA...craziness

This reminded me that I went with my mom to buy Nsync tickets around 96 or 97 at Nordstrom because they were a Ticketmaster outlet or something.

I used to go to my local grocery store just to get tickets because they sold them cheaper as an official outlet for Ticketmaster lmao

That was so wild. I can still see the photo of Linares being tackled in my mind, but can't find it anywhere online now.

I missed seeing the Smashing Pumpkins on the Machina tour because, in the fall of 99, I had to go the Ticketmaster desk i Macy's and the grandma working the system had no clue how to use it. By the time she got in, was sold out. In retrospect, we had cable internet at the time so I'm not sure why I wasn't hip to using Ticketmaster online but, long story short, I feel your pain.

I was trying to remember what happened to Aiden…I googled the band and then realized the frontman was accused of grooming teenagers. Yuck.
