Eh...not as weird in my book. Sure there is a fair amount of crossover between the two acts these days. The truly weird stuff was pre-smartphone since an audience had nothing to do BUT sit through said act they didn't care about which made it even worse. Another odd booking I remember was Less Than Jake opening for Bon Jovi in 2000.

 

How about The Academy Is... opening for KISS?

 

U2 has had some odd openers. Kanye West opened a few dates on the Vertigo tour and Rage Against The Machine opened for them on the Popmart tour.

 

The Cure did a little touring festival in 2004 and Thursday and Cursive were on the lineup

 

Rivers asked Cold to join the tour, him and Scooter became friends. Rivers actually wrote all the lyrics/melody to "Stupid Girl", Cold's only real hit.

If you listen to it now you can def tell Rivers wrote it. It's like nu-metal Weezer.

 

U2 always books legit openers...I've seen Interpol, Muse, Lenny Kravitz, and Florence + The Machine all open for them.

 

Wild that Muse opened for U2 AFTER they headlined MSG in NYC and The Forum in LA but I guess it was the final stepping stone to them locking in arena-status in the US.

 

Funny thing is I actually found out about Cold by seeing their video for "End Of The World" on a TV in a department store. This was a couple years before "Stupid Girl".

 

Less Than Jake opened for Bon Jovi. No idea what their reception was on that tour, but it's a pretty odd pairing.

 

13 ways to bleed was actually a legit decent record, but they got lumped in with the numetal/butt rock crowd.

 

Cave In opening for Foo Fighters

 

The entire Metallica Orion Festival

 

I'm seeing Chevelle and Three Days Grace tonight. Loathe is opening. That's probably another one to the list of weird tour openers.

Edit: The show starts at 5:30 and ends at 9:15. What a dream!

Wow, I never really tied the term "X Pac heat" to concerts. I just wish I knew enough people that will get that reference.

 

Who remembers the Honda civic tour with the academy is cobra Paul wall and fob. Paul wall felt out of place

 

Don't know if this has been mentioned but Bowling For Soup said on stage tonight that they will be returning next year to play all of Hangover You Don't Deserve. I will be very much looking forward to that show.
