It all depends on work schedule I feel. When I had 6am wake-up’s for work I hated doing anything that kept me out later than like 10

I'm almost 36, and it definitely hit me around 33. Impossible for me to be awake and functioning past 10:30. Whereas in my 20s I was able to stay out till 4am multiple nights a week.

Doesn't matter the circumstances. Even last week, I went to see my favorite band, Blink 182. The big reunion tour that I've been waiting 10 years for. Been hyped for it for 7 months leading up to it. And yet for the final 45 minutes of their set I had to hide my yawns lol

Idk if it’s because I live in Southern California or what but 99% of shows I’ve gone to have ended by 11pm. Only exceptions really have been festivals

I think a show ending at like 10:30/11 is I want to say ideal but reasonable would be a better word, people work and have to eat before a show so they don't get sick so 7 is realistically the earliest a show can start, maybe 6:30

on the rare occasion the headline goes on at 10 or after it definitely does make me anxious about making trains or that I'm not gonna be able to handle it, I also have insomnia so can't relate to being an early person haha

The older I get the less I care to see openers. My ideal show is one opener and show starting at 730 with headliner going on at 830-845 so the show is done by 10:15-10:30. I’m excited for the National on Saturday. Show starts at 630 and has to be over by 10. That’s absolutely perfect.

I wouldn't mind shows going late except that I always have a minimum of a 90 minute drive, and usually much longer, afterward. A Boston show that gets done at 11 won't see me getting home until 3 once you factor in leaving the venue, taking the train to my car or getting out of the city, etc. So, despite being a night owl, the earlier the better for me.

    She haunts the roads

I'm 33 and I would say I hung tough until last winter. Part of it is me being overweight and out of shape and it takes longer for my body to recover, part of it is moving from swing shifts to a regular 9-5 work schedule, another part is cumulative travel exhaustion - I took at least five flights and several more road trips over the last couple of years for shows, truly YOLO'd it once COVID restrictions loosened. But yeah, there was a point last winter where the physical toll of making the (relatively) short drive to Seattle just wasn't worth it anymore, especially if it was multiple shows in a week. Last month, I had tickets for like five shows with bands I loved and I could only muster the energy to go to one.

I actually think I could have a little more energy now that summer's around the corner, but going forward I think my general rule is is gonna be no more than two shows a month. Or hope that more shows start to come locally, which it gradually seems like they are!

Still, taking the day off work today to drive 2.5 hours to Portland both ways so I can finally catch The Cure and then go into work tomorrow - sometimes the battle picks you!

If I’m at home on the couch I’m out by 11…if I’m at a show the adrenaline always keeps me going.

I think a lot of it is coming up in the club scene and regularly having headliners start their sets at 1am.

Being a 30s gay is such a weird time ha…all your straight friends get married/have kids and move to the suburbs and you’re still out at bars and shows till 2am.

I'm turning 40 in Nov (Yikes!) Still usually fine to go to shows until 11 since I live in the city but I imagine for people my age who have to then drive/take a train to the suburbs it's a huge ball-breaker to be out on the weeknights.

Also for those of us who came up in the 00's, we all probably have PTSD from those 4-5 band bills. I like how everything is usually 2 (max 3) acts these days.

I am 34 and I go to shows a lot less than I used too (mid to late 20’s was every night of the week sometimes). Still try to make it to 2-3 a month if possible. Got a 2 year old so I am up at 6am no matter what. I just look at the late night as I’m taking an L and it is what is. I only do it a couple times a month so just gotta push through. Specially when you get to see shows like I did last night. Jeromes Dream and Elisabeth Color Wheel. Truly inspiring and intoxicating. Well worth it. Gotta wear my Nikes though. No more cool guys doc martins at the gig anymore haha

I love the shows ending at 10 now too as a near 40 year old...also in the Post-Covid world with 2 children I find that I very rarely buy tickets to shows until the day of or night before...not only for the logistics of planning for babysitting but tickets are often cheaper than face value

The DC metro closes at 12 on weeknights and 1 on weekends (and realistically I want to be at the station 30 minutes before closing if I have to transfer trains to get home). I've missed the last few songs of a set occasionally because of it, hearing 2 more songs is not worth spending $30 on an Uber vs $2 on the metro.

as a 38 y/o, the Static-X tour a few months back was surprising since there were *THREE* openers.

Whole thing ended at like 11 PM, which meant an earlier start, but it's still such a slog to sit through so many openers anymore. And with a crowd that was obviously going to skew this age range, I thought it was an interesting choice.

Lacuna Coil's recent tour also had three openers, same age range/demographic. wild expectations, IMO

I can't think of too many shows in the Cleveland area that have gone past 11. Every now and then you may get a co-headliner that goes 10-15 minutes past 11 or something, but it's pretty infrequent. I do remember the Bright Eyes show last year dragging (not in a bad way) well past 11 (maybe even to almost midnight? - I remember it being an abnormally long show)

I am pretty good operating off little sleep as I have always been a night owl and in the majority of my 20s I spent most of my weeknights going out to bars until 1/2 a.m. while getting up at 6/7 a.m. for work with little to no problem. Now that I'm damn-near 38 with wife/kids, I'm typically in bed by midnight, but I practically have to drag myself to bed every night and it doesn't matter if I wake up at 6 a.m. or 10:30 a.m., I'll be equally tired no matter what.

That said, I drink so much coffee during the day, that I'm typically wide awake once those first couple of sips hit and just ride the caffeine.

Reading everyone’s sleep/work habits is reiterating that there is definitely a market for weekend matinee shows
