Yeah, to me this takes what they did on Lament and Stage Four (less the specificity of the subject matter there) and pushes it forward while also reaching back to their earlier sound and bringing in some of the best parts of that.
They've done it again! Early standouts are mezzanine, altitude and goodbye for now. Can't wait for this to sink in more over the months. What a band.
Has anyone received their preorders yet? I can't find my order confirmation/remember when they were expecting to be delivered, but looking forward to getting the lyric sheet in my hands.
Mezzanine is my favourite. What a great song. Think the only one I'm unsure on is Subversion, very good album.
overall didn't really love this but hal ashby and mezzanine are great tracks. the outro of the latter has guitar parts that almost feel like ok computer.
How did I miss all of this? wtf just got the deluxe vinyl and it’s too late right now to start this but I listened to Goodbye for Now and holy shit, so good.
Pretty good review! And I got to learn what "ebullient" means. This album has been moving up the ranking for me. I think it might be my favorite from them.
Self-indulgent bump to say I wrote about this! Touché Amoré : Spiral in a Straight Line | Album review | Treble
Finally gave this a listen this morning since I made the spur-the-moment decision to see them in Chicago tonight. Their tones are SO. FUCKING. GOOD. I love that they worked with Ross Robinson again. Can't wait to dig in more throughout the workday before they pummel me later.
I've been checking out a lot of Touche interviews/reviews/videos the last week and actually read this review yesterday finding it though a search. Nice review! This interview has some neat info also How The Cure & Nick Cave Inspired Touchè Amorè's New Album, ‘Spiral In A Straight Line’ The riff from Nobody's is something Jeremy originally wrote for Thursday to use over a decade ago. Next year they will (probably) release a b-side they cut from Spiral with possibly an alternate version of Finalist with different lyrics. The song that was cut was a bit too close sonically to another track so they felt for the album flow it was better to use it elsewhere.
chances are probably slim, largely because most bands only seem to do two albums back-to-back with him and then move on, but I would love for them to just keep working with Ross for as long as possible.
