same tbh kind of what i was getting at with my questions. they may not be conscious of it but entirely writing off or deciding you dont like such a predominately black art form requires some scrutiny
there are definitely some i am forgetting (esp. in hip-hop) but these are some albums i remember having a very significant reaction to upon hearing, both years ago and recently
i think people that dont appreciate or take the time to understand it are racist, or at the very least have racist tendencies
the thing is that its not about whether or not the individual is a racist or a good person or whatever, its about their actions/tastes/habits and why they are the way they are. labeling someone a racist is hardly relevant. whether or not their taste or habits appear racist, why that is, and what they can do to remedy that is what should be focused on.
I tend to agree. What if someone was way into Jazz or other genres dominated by poc but hated hip hop?
oh no it's totally fine! i'm not calling you out at all haha. i know i'm not even the best person to be discussing this but i'm at least trying to assert my own thoughts so i can work more in the direction i want to be in
i think generally speaking much more explicitly centered around the modern black experience than something like jazz or blues or just rock. all of those have been coopted and whitewashed anyway. rap is the predominant storytelling format for black americans and our cultural lingua franca and i think it's at best suspect for someone to outright dislike it
my list is like all dudes besides sspu. i gotta look at that. there are some female fronted or featuring albums that easily could've made it. but they didnt, so i gotta ask myself why
This was something I noticed about my list as well and am now rectifying it, but it's mostly due to me just being forgetful.
a big issue i thought about while making mine is how the canon that we've all been exposed to for most of our lives isn't super inclusive of women, which isn't an excuse but i think helps contextualize why things are the way they are.
agreed. but damn poc p much grandfathered blues and jazz. straight up revolutionized jazz over and over again. hip hop is the new genre so of course it fresh on the mind
yeah i was literally just thinking about how in reality i havent been exposed to as much women in music until quite recently.
ultimately i dont get too btohered by these things because theyre just pointless fun and not really exactingly-thought-out lists or anything, its just kinda weird to have literally all of them be white dudes yk
and i got a healthy discussion going about it where we're all reflecting on our own prejudices in our taste so mission accomplished
@sophos34 @Chaplain Tappman @Your Milkshake @cwhit thank you all for discussing this with me I appreciate it
I ask myself these sorts of things on a seemingly weekly basis. I'll always keep a shorthand list of my top 30 favorite albums and edit that list frequently and I have a couple female artists in there, but I ultimately keep asking myself "Why aren't there more female artists, why aren't there more LGBTQ musicians, why aren't there POC on this list?" I use it to rectify my listening habits and to discover more music, a lot of times through these forums and the threads created specifically for them
I'm really sad that I have tried to do this upward of 10 times now and keep getting the loading wheel of death
