For my chart I allowed only 1 album to represent each artist (WTT vs Kanye / Jay Solo is fine because they are technically different artists). Each tier is in order by how much the albums mean to me but within the tiers there is no specific order. With that being said my top 5 albums are my most influential for sure.
Viva is the band at their most ambitious and will be remembered as their most respected and most cohesive work. It's vastly underrated as an body of work.
These are the albums that have had the biggest impacts on me growing up and I will defend these records. They hold up incredibly well for me.
i wasn't going to actually say anything i'm mostly just fucking around!!! i have no problem with what you enjoy i'm just screwing around as i always do
Was never a Coldplay fan but they were dope at MIA. I was also bent and buzzing off of Chance's set, but I enjoyed it
I have still been unable to come up with a list but I'm happy seeing people's lists with 808's in the Top 4. That's pretty cool.
Re: listening to artists of color/women artists/LGBT+ artists, I think it's very easy to call people out for their limited viewpoints and I used to think that being as blunt as possible was right, mainly because tiptoeing around the topic or being "nice" about it or whatever just lead to issues with accountability and visibility within the scene getting swept under the rug in favor of "subjectivity". As I've gotten a bit more mature (although probably not) I can see the levels of grey in this discussion. I think that, explicitly or not, there is something problematic about only/mainly listening to straight, white men. I think that placing the blame on individuals and calling them out for being racist/sexist/homophobic ignores the larger, inherent problems with visibility in the scenes that many people on this site draw from. The culture should be called out, rather than the listeners, especially if they are attempting to expand their views. I think people who say "I can't change what I like" need to recognize the cultural, racist reasons which lead every artist they like to look exactly the same. I think people should actively stretch their boundaries. I think that seeking out music by artists of color or artists not within their own positionality can only be a positive thing, and I think shutting those artists out because they don't match the image a person projects for likability or talent or whatever is wrong. Basically, I think people should be self aware or self conscious if they like primarily white, male music and question why that might be.
very well said. there's a big element of this that comes from listening to the music that our parents pass down to us. we need to continue to learn to evolve, keep open ears, and amplify the voices of others who were silenced for generations.
That's why I'm so grateful to my parents/cousins/older family members for having such diverse taste, at least in terms of race and gender. I know plenty of people who were raised on Zeppelin/Floyd/The Beatles/90s rock radio or whatever, and they aren't really to blame for having initial limited taste. I think that if a person is willing to join a site like this and post about music in their free time, they are interested and mature enough to attempt to explore other cultures and their music. I still have missing spots that I'm not too well versed in. I recognize my limitations and also recognize that it takes time and effort to explore different genres/artists.
Weirdly enough my mum listens almost exclusively to music made by women of colour and I think it turned me off a lot of that kind of stuff just because it sounded like music my mum would listen to. It's only recently I've grown to appreciate a lot of that stuff. She put me off Kanye for a while too.
