That album came out pretty soon after a 7-year relationship ended, so it was profoundly important to me. Obviously I recognize not everyone will have quite that intense of a connection to it, but I am still surprised by how little of an impact it had here. It's one of the most directly emotional albums I've ever heard.

Do I remember you saying once that Crime In Stereos - IWTTDYTS was your favorite album ever or am I making that up in my brain
You remember correctly! Haha, and it was for about five years. Recently I'd say that's changed to Sun Kil Moon's Ghosts of the Great Highway. This list was more of a weird amalgamation of what I consider to be the best 15 albums of the decade so far.
Right on. I feel ya, I think I did my list with a similar mind set. I havnt been able to get into Sun Kil Moon in the past, maybe I'll have to give them another shot.
What have you listened to? Mark's a grumpy old jerk, but if you can look past that, there's basically three iterations of his music: his slowcore stuff with Red House Painters (Down Colorful Hill through Bridge), what I would dub his "golden years" (Ocean Beach through Sun Kil Moon's April), and his recent spoken-word style releases (Admiral Fell Promises forward). Obviously, I prefer thar midsection of his discography, but I'd recommend checking out both Ghosts of the Great Highway and Benji in order to get a feel for how he's grown. This is one of the best songs I have ever heard:
Did not think I'd see Bon Iver at the top of your list. Don't I recall you selling that LP a year or two ago?
Cool list, I think I coulda guessed like half ish of it haha. Also surprised to see BIBI at number one tho. Guess I need to check out grizzly bear too huh?
Did this really quick and it hurt cutting some of the records i had to cut. The 1975- I like it when you sleep Gaslight Anthem-Handwritten Against Me!-Transgender Dysphoria Blues Balance and Composure-The Things We Think We're Missing La Dispute-Wildlife letlive.- Fake History Foxing-The Albatross Manchester Orchestra-Simple Math All Get Out- The Season The Hotelier- Home, Like Noplace Is There Moose Blood-I'll Keep You In Mind, From Time to Time Hamilton The World Is A Beautiful Place...-Harmlessness Mat Kearney-Young Love The Menzingers- On The Impossible Past
I have such a hard time making lists that span a lot of time like this but always want to be involved, so I'm literally just gonna go with the first 15 albums that I think of and try to be at peace with it when inevitably question my choices in ten minutes Moving Mountains - Moving Mountains All Get Out - The Season NK - Nothing To Be Gained Here Daughter - Not To Disappear The 1975 - ILIWYS Pinegrove - Cardinal Author - Of Brighter Days Foxing - Dealer Copeland - Ixora Now, Now - Threads Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap Architects - Lost Forever // Lost Together Periphery - Periphery II Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion Anderson .Paak - Malibu
fuck I went to take a shower and immediately thought of Local Natives - Hummingbird Hellogoodbye - Would It Kill You? Vacationer - Gone
Nope! I sold For Emma, which I still think is kind of a mediocre record haha BIBI is something that didn't fully click until a few years ago, but I've quickly come to realize that I haven't heard anything quite as beautiful or strange as it before, and every time I listen to it, it inspires me to create to no end. So that's why it's at #1, and I firmly believe that 22, A Million is going to give BIBI a run for its money. Definitely definitely definitely listen to Shields. I don't even know how to describe it, it's just an incredible and versatile indie-rock record. I'm gonna throw the LP on right now, haha.
I think it's fine. I actually revisited it yesterday having been listening to BIBI and the new singles so much lately, and there are some songs I really enjoy. But as a whole, it's never stuck with me. Productionwise, it's the opposite of an album like BIBI, and despite how much more personal it's supposed to be, it never really touches me emotionally the way BIBI does. To me, it's just a good indie-folk album, but nothing special in the shadow of BIBI and those new singles. I'm trying to think of another album I could compare my feelings to, haha.
I feel similarly although I think I like For Emma more than you seem to. I still love most of that album but I think BIBI is way better and the new album seems like it will be too.
That's interesting to me. Were you a fan of his back in 2007/2008, or did you get into him with BI, BI? I think that BI, BI is the better album on the whole. It really brings you into its world. But I still don't think he's written a song that is better than "Blindsided" or "Re: Stacks." I think his big production and orchestration habits often add a lot to his songs these days, but I feel like they also sometimes result in lazier writing at a fundamental level. I really like looking back at For Emma because of how much more modest it is. With that said, I find both of the first two records very moving, just in different ways.
Though, I supposed the fundamental elements of his songwriting have also just changed since For Emma. I think lyrics and melody were more of a focus then, while now he's more interested in texture and atmosphere. I thought BI, BI found a happy medium between the two, which is why it's so great.
Love this BI discussion. For Emma is what got me into him (them), but BI,BI is what made them an all time favorite for me. I think he's one of the absolute best at creating mood and atmosphere, and that's what makes BI,BI so great for me. Lyrics are pretty much the last thing I care about in BI's music.
I got into them with BIBI. I was actually on vacation at the time in Chicago and read Drew's 10/10 review the morning it was released, and then just happened to spot the CD at a Starbucks (I know, I know) and decided to take a chance on it. But even then, like I said, I'm still not sure I really "got it" until a few years ago (when I bought the LP). I full-heartedly agree with this.
anyone care to talk about Shields? The production is so fucking cool. Sleeping Ute and Yet Again made me have to have a princeton reverb
Okay, I can completely get listening to BI, BI first and then going back to For Emma and having it be underwhelming and kind of confounding. I got really into For Emma right before Christmas vacation my senior year of high school, just as the weather was starting to get cold and snowy, and it was perfect. I still remember vividly playing that album on a bunch of cold drives to school in the morning. Whereas BI, BI is a pure muggy summer night album for me. I hold them in completely different places, in a way I don't think I would if I got into Bon Iver after the second album was already out.
