This was a little hit or miss for me, but overall I thought it was pretty solid and I think a lot of you are really going to love it. All the body horror was good.
This was awesome haha. Scarier than I expected at times, but also laugh out loud funny and insane. Kinda wish they reigned it in and ended on litttttle more serious note but oh well.
really was into this up until the scene where they cut their arms apart. felt like really petered out after that.
I somehow managed to miss all trailers and marketing for this and went in fully blind. Was not expecting this! had a great time with it. After the opening scene with the dogs, a lady behind me whispered rather loudly "what the actual fuck is this movie"
Thought this was great. Maybe best needle drop in a movie this year so far too. the scene towards the beginning of the movie where he sees his mom in his dream, and then she appears under the blanket. That genuinely got me good.
I dug this a lot! I went in very blind, but I still feel like the amount of body horror was probably a little overhyped. That being said, when it hit, it hit and was extremely effective and creative in its execution. The chemistry between IRL married couple Franco and Brie stirs this entire drink; pretty much anyone in a long-term relationship will feel some of these tense and tired conversations in their bones. I was quite surprised at how funny this thing is, perhaps to the detriment of its well-earned dread at certain points. There are some genuine laugh out loud bits of writing and delivery sprinkled throughout. I would agree with others in here that it stumbles a bit in the final quarter between random story inconsistencies and schizophrenic shifts in tone, but on the whole it's incredibly well paced and just a fun time. Recommended.
I liked it a lot thematically, wished they went more extreme because those parts were great, just pretty quick.
whoever did the sound design for this should win a large number of prestigious awards and then be locked up for the rest of their natural life
Definitly has some script issues but I had fun. That reveal at the end was awful, though, looked like an SNL skit — should have cut it off on the turntable. “Twist” seemed pretty obvious too.
or just the parents look on their face when they open the door and just cut it right there and leave you wondering.
basically where I’m at with it too, several script issues and I usually don’t try to figure a movie out and just let it unfold but it all felt super telegraphed like screen writing 101
yeah the last shot definitely left me with a sour taste in my mouth after a mostly great experience the tonal shifts throughout this were really wild - first 30 minutes were genuinely scary (Tim's two nightmares almost had me watching through my fingers lol), then the shift into body horror was well-done but it felt like they weren't really sure what tone to go for so all the gross scenes were almost too funny to fully land, then the last 20 and the ending basically played like a comedy. I think Shanks has a classic in him just based on those nightmare sequences but he's not there yet
I liked the tonal progression, it made sense thematically to me to get lighter, especially at the end as they basically abandoned their fear. I think I always kinda got horror comedy vibes from this for some reason though. The last shot made me think of what it must be like for grandparents to see a human who is essentially a mix or their own kid with someone else.
I had fun with this and I'm glad I caught it in theaters but I don't know if it was very good. Obviously not subtle, but beyond that I think Dave Franco is pretty bad and the tonal shifts felt like oil and water to me. Still smiled a lot at the body horror stuff and I think it was well-directed. Shame that last shot is awful and feels so tacked on.
