(i know it could be worse but still grumpy about this, hence the post)

i've had back issues on/off for over a decade and finally decided to go to the doctor. no major issues, they prescribe PT. the annoyance begins with my insurance - and the PT office - not being able to give me an estimate on how much my insurance would cover. like... it's 2022, how is that not something you know AT LEAST for the first appointment where you barely do anything?

And of course, they don't want to wait on my "care" so I've had like 4-5 appointments.

First bill arrives today and on top of being barely able to decipher what's typed up, it's quite a bit! And I'm "told" that my employer has one of the better insurance coverage plans in the city. and if THAT bill I got today was just for the first appointment then i am gonna be pretty pissed when the rest show up.

I know medical bills don't have to be paid in full and don't collect interest but still, my main issue is not being able to give me any estimate for what my costs would be.

Additionally, while yes, i felt PT was overall helpful, there are a handful of exercises I was already doing and/or had learned FROM FUCKING YOUTUBE FOR FREE that they wanted me to do.

long story short, my attempt to "believe" in the medical world and the idea of "get something treated before it becomes a bigger issue" is once again scoffed at by me because now a handful of PT appointments is gonna cost like 2-3K when all is said and done and still no guarantee my back issues are fixed since it happens sporadically so 4-5 months from now i MIGHT have that answer and then maybe i will feel better about the cost.

and of course, what did i hurt yesterday on a run that has now bugged me all day? my left foot. which, maybe in a twist of last Halloween-spookiness is odd because there's an older guy in my apartment building with a walking boot on his left foot, and i've seen 3-4 people in stores the last two weeks with walking boots on their left foot. conspiracy!

I work in medical billing and it’s all a giant cluster fuck and no one knows what’s going on. The doctors, insurance companies etc all make shit up constantly I swear.

When trying to choose a health insurance plan I asked my pcp (an internist) if he’s billed as a pcp or a specialist and neither he, nor billing, could tell me. And that’s only the first level of the rabbit hole insurance has brought me down

the providers know the least because they don’t handle anything and most of the billing is done through third party companies (which is who I work for) so most of the people that work for the provider also don’t know anything.

When I first started I would get authorizations for medical procedures and we’d give feed back to the providers because half of them wouldn’t give complete medical notes so we couldn’t get procedures authorized and they would never listen to us because they are doctors and we are the little piss ants that do the BS work.

This seems to be my experience trying to figure out what the fuck something is gonna cost me through insurance. My doctor tells me to ask insurance, insurance tells me to ask my doctor or that there's no way of knowing ahead of time and to just cross my fingers

yep because that’s where coding comes in, the coders are the ones that look at the medical records and choose what procedure codes and diagnosis codes to bill so it’s super hard to get an actual answer.

Yeah when people make up acronyms that aren’t commonly used I’m like great now I have to do homework to figure out what you’re talking about.

Drives me absolutely nuts, feels like half the time it’s more effort typing out the acronym than the damn name
