i think the sentiment of using yall is good but tbh ive seen the argument made that it sort of creeps into cultural appropriation territory. genuinely not trying to call anyone out here or start shit since theres clearly a lot of good reason for more people wanting to adopt it recently. im white so dont take my input as the gospel by any means. its just my impression. i usually just say you all, or yous when my hoagie mouth accidentally comes out.
I think "y'all" is used pretty heavily regardless of race depending on where you live. It's a pretty common word among southerners, and just from visiting Colorado, a ton of people seem to say it there
There are pretty undeniably a lot of people that comfortably use it now that didn’t used to or aren’t from areas where it’s common vernacular. But it’s not really appropriation as much as it’s just the word having its time in the limelight of popular slang. And then yeah, the gender neutral part helps too The problem (at least imo) is more in regards to blaccent, which often kinda bleeds into sentences with “y’all”. Cause it’s not like you ever hear someone slip into a southern drawl when using “y’all” in a sentence lol. Kinda only ever goes one way. But even then, the word itself is far from being the problematic part
yeah i mean i guess theres some grey area depending on context. im not very informed on linguistics, all i know is ive lived most of my life in northeast and ive never heard it used by white people too much irl, when it is its mostly rural types. it seems A LOT more commonly used by white people on the internet then where i am irl at least. i live in a small city that sits between a huge metro area and the sticks for what its worth.
the only one I'm appropriating when I say y'all is Sandy Cheeks , I like that homies is gender neutral too but that's more iffy
There was an interesting mini-discussion about this type of thing in the Olivia Rodrigo thread awhile ago. def some, like, 35 y/o Ned Flanders types irl who say shit like "y'all wildin fam" online, which feels... weird, but I guess strikes me as more of a How Do You Do, Fellow Kids energy than appropriation
having to buy socks over and over my socks will be a few months old and have holes in them and it doesn't matter what brand it is
this reminds me that at work we’ve been working on our new website for the last 16 months and people will constantly say “PDP page” but PDP stands for “Product Detail Page” so it’s saying “page page” which drives me nuts (like “ATM machine”).
when you lose something and someone asks you where the last place you remember having it was rarely (if ever) helps
the Google Fi commercials were already very bad but with each subsequent one they become so much more incomprehensible and annoying that it's honestly just baffling
