For the past decade, there has been a community of like-minded yet totally electric-sounding bands that have steadily built dedicated fan bases on their own with little promotion or fanfare. In an industry that often seems driven by social media, these bands took the difficult route of tireless touring and gaining fans via word of mouth until what began as a whisper became a shout that was impossible to ignore. All they needed was a home—and that’s where Black Cement Records and celebrated producer Will Yip come into the picture. Yip, who has helped foster this community by recording everyone from Balance & Composure to The Menzingers will serve as the curator of Black Cement Records, heading up all A&R efforts for the new Atlantic Records imprint. Yip explains, "I think this world of bands deserves a home of their own that has the resources of a major label in order to expose them to new audiences around the world."
Correspondingly, the first release on Black Cement Records will be the celebrated Scranton, Pennsylvania, indie rock act TIGERS JAW's upcoming full-length, spin, an album that Yip produced while the beloved group was in transition and still searching for a home. "At the end of the day I'm on the band's side and if they couldn't benefit from the label I wouldn't bring them on,” he explains, “but I thought TIGERS JAW were the perfect band to be on Black Cement because every note is so genuine and the music is so incredibly catchy." TIGERS JAW's guitarist/vocalist Ben Walsh adds, "As soon as we started discussing working together with Black Cement, we felt comfortable and confident that we share a similar vision. They believe in sincere, dynamic music and can see the potential and importance in bringing music of this caliber to a wider audience.”
In other words, Black Cement Records is a place to nurture these bands without attempting to mold them into anything that isn't completely authentic. “One thing that's very important to point out about this label is that we won't be touching any of this music creatively in terms of the art itself,” Yip explains. “There are no restrictions on anyone's creativity including mine. That's the coolest thing about working with Atlantic, they just want me to keep doing what I've been doing for the past ten years. Because when one of these acts does well they all benefit; we're helping form a community of punk or alternative bands that could benefit from having a larger sounding board.” It’s all about shared experiences so in the same way that Yip's older brother exposed him to the Pixies, Black Cement Records hopes to expose teenagers in the Midwest to their future favorite band like TIGERS JAW.
“The one thing that all of the bands share other than solid songwriting is that they don't care what other people think,” Yip explains. “Every band I work with just wants to make the best music that they possibly can and none of them are following a fad.” Admittedly, La Dispute may sound nothing like Title Fight, but all of these acts have what Yip refers to as a “shared heartbeat” that unites them regardless of where they might individually draw their influences from. Moving forward the label will be announcing more signings, but one thing is for sure, all of the bands will share Yip's ethics and excitement toward music. “The next band we release definitely isn't going to sound like TIGERS JAW, but they'll have that same integrity,” Yip summarizes. “With Black Cement we're not chasing trends; we're trying to set the next trend.”

this is either going to be awesome or a horrible failure for all of these bands

this imprint sounds way more grandiose than it actually is; if I understand it's basically just Yip recommending bands to/doing A&R for Atlantic? I don't think it will succeed because I don't see Title Fight/La Dispute/Tigers Jaw moving enough records to be on a major...

yeah i'm just worried that this'll crash and burn because atlantic will just not put enough effort once they realize that they have better options out there

fingers crossed, i would love for this to become like the drive-thru of this generation

Nice, this the direction I was hoping they would go in. Hopefully the new imprint works out for all the bands in this scene that will be associated with it.

Jumping in here from the band thread. Loving the new track, been a fan of the band since the first record and this song instantly became one of my favourites. Wish the tour wasn't skipping right over Montreal but I'm used to it.
