I also really Anxious Blade. Those chunkier palm muted guitars are a fun sound for them, not to mention Brianna’s vocals.
Brianna and Ben’s voices just work so well together. I do miss some of the energy of their earlier stuff but the vocals definitely improved after Adam left and Brianna started singing more (no dig at Adam either, I love the early stuff too it’s just different).
“Baptized on a Redwood Drive” is the standout for me. The plodding drums are a powerful throughline that allow the rest of the elements to drift without straying too far. The vocals and lyrics are on point but their greatest service is overall texture, and the guitars know how to accentuate the right moments Everything works together so effectively. I could call the song repetitive but never boring, and the dreamy final minute-and-a-half is icing on the cake. This band rarely makes songs over 5 mins, but when they do, they make that time feel earned
Impressed with this record altogether. I Won’t Care How You Remember Me felt like the band spinning its wheels. It’s refreshing to hear them take a more loose approach this one, and the mixing is superb
primary colors, anxious blade, breezer, light leaks through and the title track are top tier tj songs
This is probably going to be my most listened to album of the year. Already becoming something I'm throwing on when I dunno what to listen to, but know I wanna listen to music. Their last album was similar.
After a handful of listens I think this is good, with the back half being better than most of the first half. I wasn’t particularly enamored with any of the singles and I think this is the least excited I’ve ever been for a TJ album. Hope it grows on me.
This is excellent and i feel like an idiot for being lukewarm on it at first. Baptized on a redwood drive... lord.
Saw them last night in Portland, Maine. As always, they were very solid live and they never disappoint. The new songs came across really well. After spending a bit more time with Lost on You, I like it, but I still prefer the faster tempo of “I Won’t Care…”. That album might actually be my favorite TJ record.
“Stone” and “Baptized” have me so fucked up. The latter is one of those songs you can tell you’re going to love from first listen based on the first few chords alone. When they hit, they hit.
Also I’ve said it on the forum before, and even if it’s not how it’s always intended, but hearing certain music now from the perspective of an addict is so layered and “different” for lack of a better term.
