Not too impressed on my first listen going in blind; I really enjoy the fuller production, and the last few tracks were highlights for sure (Ben needs to sing in his lower register more, that was awesome), but I think a lot of the melodies feel a bit aimless, or at least I felt like there was a lot of abrupt dead ends when trying to follow along in my head. Could be it just being new-stuff-unfamiliarity but a lot of the songs feel familiar in that Tigers Jaw post-Spin way, so it’s throwing me off I wish Primary Colors was deeper in the tracklisting. It feels a bit too mellow of an opening after it’s ok, and I think something more akin to the I Don’t Care How You Remember Me -> Cat’s Cradle sequencing feels more fitting it you’re going with an acoustic start, but I’m sure the slower pace will grow on me. I definitely enjoy the song, but felt taken aback by the sequencing. Obviously, first listen isn’t gospel, and I’ve changed my mind on plenty of them before, but it feels like a more refined version of the previous album, which was a more refined version of Spin. Was hoping for a big change of pace as the general consensus I’ve seen from this band (on this site) is that they’ve been on the same sound for a while. Seeing good things in this thread though so I’ll keep the album on rotation to warm up to it more. I do like how Ben ends the album saying “it’s ok”, alluding to the album opener. Reminds me of a convo I had with Bri back in the post-Charmer pre-Spin days where she told me the What Would You Do outro is supposed to feel like a loop that punches you back into Cool
love how much brianna is featured on this. these guys always have the best openers. i've come to accept they have their defined sound and are gonna stick to it. just gonna enjoy it for what it is.
Yeah just finished the whole thing, this is great. I haven't had that good of a first impression of a band in this sphere doing what they do well since TSSF's Proper Dose. Not a comparison sonically, just an example of a band executing their current sound in a fantastic way.
Ready to give this a spin and eagerly waiting for my merch related to the release to arrive. I think I didn't listen to every single (might have missed the last 1 or 2) so a lot of it will be fresh. I'm okay if it's more of the same - they do what they do well and I've never seen them live and have to look forward to soon as well.
Surprised nobody mentioned "Baptized on a Redwood Drive." Reminds me a lot of METN-era Manchester Orchestra.
Just listened on my shitty earbuds and this is the most I’ve liked a Tigers Jaw record on first listen since Charmer
Write you out of all the plans I made Thought of all the worst things you could say And I can't wait to collect But I'm not ready yet
Currently listening to it. It’s phenomenal so far. Staring at Empty Faces and Light Leaks Through are so so good.
Yeah this is good stuff. I'm not the biggest fan, but I always look forward to new music from them and I'm always pleased.
Yeah this is pretty much fantastic, they’re best when Bri and Ben are both on tracks vocally I think. Primary Colors Baptized on a Redwood Dive Staring at Empty Faces Light Leaks Through Lost on You are all top tier.
