Oh my god. I am so sorry that happened to you. It's fucking awesome that you took your little brother to his first show and helped him discover this music. Whenever I'm at shows for bands that have been around a long time and see a young kid, I'm so happy for them to discover stuff I love. Thursday was my first show too when I was 14. I was on my own and remember getting pushed around a lot but I think that was because I didn't know what a mosh pit was and I was in the middle of it.
The wall of noise that is A City by the light...caught me off guard. Just listened for the first time. Think it'll take me many more listens until I like it as much as the rest of this thread seems to
Wall of noise is an interesting way to describe it, I think besides No Dev that this is their most melodic album. Though into the blinding light literally ends with a wall of noise so I guess it's not far off. Keep trying!
I agree with this...was caught off guard with 'wall of noise' comment myself. Maybe I'm not understanding the description. Other than At this Velocity, it's not really that heavy at all, imo. To your other post, I'd go as far as saying Autumn Leaves Revisited is their best song and one of my all-time favorites by anyone.
basically what i meant by this was the crashing percussion, the dirty fucking bass, the buried vocals, and the overall "fuzziness" of some of the tracks. Although, I've listened to the album twice more (srs; and I'm currently on listen #4 rn) since I originally posted that. A lot of tracks grew on me greatly.
i was expecting different production but not that different. wall of noise may be hyperbole but after listening to only FC and WATT for the past couple of weeks, i still felt unprepared for this haha.
I don't think the description is that far off. There's a lot of noise coming from the production of the album. It is very "in your face." Geoff's vocals swirling around you in an atmospheric haze, pulverizing drums, synth/keyboard parts taking up more space in the mix with Andrew officially on board then. There's a lot to the album to unpack and digest. And I'd say a good chunk of the album is heavy. Sure, At This Velocity and Into The Blinding Light are easily the most aggressive songs on the album, but The Other Side Of The Crash, The Lovesong Writer, and Autumn Leaves Revisited definitely offer up their own heavy moments, some of which are the heaviest on the entire album if you ask me.
I think this is how the majority of listeners felt back then.. i hated a city at first.. keep listening, once you catch on to the melodies and the guitar work you will realize it may be their best record
I would have agreed with you like three months ago at saying that's their best song but now I gotta say Turnpike Divides oh yeah for sure, I don't think you're wrong, I just had never thought about it like that before because the melodic parts is what I most payed attention to on it. It's definitely a dense album in that regard, and I don't think it's not heavy, I just was surprised because coming off WATT I remember my experience as being similarly surprised by the angular melodies and not noticing the layers til later. I'd add Sugar in the Sacrament as a song that mixes that heaviness and melodic quality. teebs the first part had me going wtf but you brought me back with the last part, nice
No Devolucion is tied with ACBTLD for me. Both are incredible. Autumn Leaves Revisted is definitely my favorite song though
ACBTLD is my favorite but ND is a very close second. Honestly two of the best records I've ever heard
There was a petition on change.org to petition Andrew to play the Chicago show. It was created by a person who is on tour with them, taking photos and whatnot. Very confusing.
Yeah the instant acbtld came out it was my fave, tho I can see how it can be a big change to swallow, even if imo it was a great change. It was also the first era I saw them live so it has the memories and all
I'm always bummed I never saw them earlier. First time I saw them was opening for Taking Back Sunday on the ND tour cycle. I saw them two days in a row on that tour, and then on the farewell tour. Tomorrow is my show and I'm so excited to see them again!
I guess I could've seen them around ND, I would've been around 14, but I def would've been too young to get them at any other album cycle
I opted to not go see Thursday this Thursday because of the ticket prices were just too high. 1/3rd of the cost go to AXS and frankly I don't want to support that kind of price gouging. I just hope they play near me again soon. ND > ACBTLD > WATT > FC > CE
Yeah, prices were steep but I got my tix when they were announced and was too stoked to care. Would argue that for a four band bill the price is reasonable tho
^exactly, the only way I can get a ticket is online and I just rather...not? If they ever come to Richmond, I'll go.
You ever have Turnpike Divides on repeat and then you finally let it go into Stay True and then you casually transcend this plane of reality because it's so fucking good
