That's what Thrice did, and since their breakups/reforms are mentally linked to so many fans, that would totally not surprise me. I think it'd be in your face and atmospheric, really polarized
I got through Common Existence today. Very good record. To me, it sounds like they took what they did with WATT and City and mixed it together, while still keeping things fresh. It's more straightforward and less atmospheric than City, but it builds upon the matured songwriting chops they demonstrated on that record. Beyond The Visible Spectrum, Love Has Led Us Astray, and You Were The Cancer slayed me. I'm definitely noticing that Thursday has a penchant for writing phenomenal closing tracks, haha. Soon, onto No Dev and then circling back to check out Waiting, and stuff like Kill The House Lights and b-sides.
i dont think its less atmospheric than city at all, i think its just as atmospheric but a little bit darker, more shades of black than shades of red (its easy for me to think of it in colors if that makes sense).
I'd agree with this. Cover perfectly gets the atmosphere right. I think they got better at straight-forward hooks. I think some on City are not the strongest (basically Counting and We Will Overcome)
we will overcome is actually one of their most underrated songs. everyone points to it as a weak link on city but i think its great
p sure they were only talking about the hook being weaker than the other hooks not the whole song but maybe i am projecting
This makes sense to me. It could be something in the production as well that gives me that feeling. Not to be too on the nose, but City does feel lighter based on my brief comparisons of the two, but your color analogy clarifies the distinction between the two in a way that clicks with me
That's what I meant for sure. Counting and Overcome RULE I just think the chorus on Counting is not very good and Overcome just isn't as good as other tracks
I was thinking about Common Existence the other day and how it compares to ACBTLD and I realized it's just as atmospheric, particularly from Time's Arrow onward. Also, We Will Overcome rules. It's my least favorite from the album, but it's still really good and has really grown on me lately more than ever before. I think it does enough to keep things interesting and the hook works
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really enjoy We Will Overcome. I definitely prefer it to the first two songs on the album, Telegraph Avenue Kiss, and maybe At This Velocity. Then again, I greatly prefer Panic on the Streets of Healthcare City to The Otherside of the Crash. I always felt Common Existence was underrated, especially in this community at the time of its release... I'm glad to see that people are realizing how damn good it is.
I wasn't overly impressed with CE when it came out, especially bc I didn't like resuscitation. I would just listen to subway funeral and dark mountain. but my how times have changed.
I had a hard time getting into CE because it felt like both a step back and a step forward in terms of the sounds explored. It has since grown to become my second (or third ?) favorite release after No Devolucion and ACBTLD.
Cancer is maybe like *the* quintessential Thursday song. Like if you were to take everything good about Thursday and put that all into one song, it would be that song
I was thinking about it and I think I personally underrate Cancer. Because it's one of my favorites, but for some reason I never /expect it/ to knock me on my ass even though it does every time. but I have never underrated Turnpike Divides
