not sure how he's gonna breathe but i sure like listening to it. for the record, WATT is my clear favorite, musically and sentimentally.
interesting thing i noticed at the shows is that he seemed to be rapping some parts of songs, hah. dude really does love kanye west
Gonna say city=nd=watt=ce>fc>waiting Fc would be better without Wind Up. Gotta admit that song does zero for me. Also not a big Paris in flames fan. Dont ban me plz
I was war all of the time as my number one for a really long time but a city may have passed it today, incredible band
I had no idea city was so highly regarded. Then again, seems like each time rankings come up a new crowd with a totally different consensus does it.
ACBTLD is my favorite sound-wise but I dont know if I could pick my favorite Thursday album lyrically. CE's always hit me as super well-written as an album though, whereas City and especially ND feel more like individual songs. Kinda hard to explain but CE's thematic linkage is strong.
Yeah CE had that running theme of relating it to humanity as a whole and in general responding to other works of art. But ND has that cohesiveness too, he wrote it to be all kinds of devotion and love and the different way it appears. And I think the diversity of that is kind of brilliant. Will agree A City is mostly a collection of songs but I sometimes wonder if I'd still feel that way if it was released as a double album like intended
City's a pretty exhausting listen as is, I dont think it needed to be a double album haha. But yeah, on ND, the themes just seem a lot more apparent on some and kinda hazy like on Millimeter. Always been a cool song imo, but a head-scratcher for sure. Also very musically out of left field, which contributes to the collection-of-song-ness
I think it largely stems from the fact that I didn't listen to it much when it came out, so in my head it's the "outlier" of their catalogue and feels a bit more distant. I'd also say that, at least to me, it's the musical outlier and i often have to remind myself how good it is.
I just feel like I wanna know what could've been, you know? Like I would've loved a deluxe version where the cut tracks are what would've made the other half. I see you on millimeter, but I interpret it as a metaphor for how no matter how close / how much you love someone, love can't necessarily save you from the shit eating you up inside. I get this from the juxtaposition of the gun (a suicide metaphor in my head) and the person in the bed (intimacy). Maybe I'm wrong tho I think it's their most sonically diverse record but not necessarily uncharacteristic for them. There's nothing on that album where I'm like "huh, weird Thursday song that has no precedent." Maybe some of the more melodic stuff? But I see that less as outliers and more like whoa Thursday is writing better riffs and melodies now outside of aggressive sounding stuff. I get having records you know are good and reminding yourself of their quality tho, especially since it feels like city does change sonically on a dime
Yea, I'd agree it's not necessarily uncharacteristic. The vocals are what feel the most different to me. i think the atmospheric touch on the vocals is rather heavy handed for a Thursday album, at least up until ND came out. I guess in that respect it had been the most "tame" album, and that's what made me surprised to see it ranking high. Usually don't go to Thursday for atmospherics.
I love the atmosphere on Thursday albums. Half of their discography is like that too, from City onwards, but I understand how of you had listened to Thursday in real time how that would've been weird the first time since you don't have Common Existence or No Devo to look at either.
All that said, the "you're in my heart/in my hands/round my neck" in TAK is bone chilling every time. Prob my favorite moment on that album. City also has far and away their best album cover.
My favorite moment might be on sugar in the sacrament. "THIS. IS. ALL WE'VE EVER KNOWN. OF GOOOOOOOOOD." or all of autumn leaves revisited. City might be my least favorite artwork for them though, some days it's the war all the time artwork. City is just so busy, I can't really tell what I'm looking at a lot of the time
