I've always loved it, but I remember there were some complaints about songs/production. Unfounded complaints.
I think CE is great. Some people seem to view it as more of a side-step in the evolution of their sound, but I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Still has a handful of really great songs.
I haven't listened to CE in full in a while, but the timing of the release probably had the biggest impact on its reception. Coming off of the extraordinary ACBTLD, it was hard not to be a bit disappointed at the time. You Were the Cancer is a contender for GOAT Thursday song tho
I know this will be unpopular, but I like CE just as much as ACBTLD. Beyond the Visible Spectrum might be my favorite Thursday song. Time's Arrow, Subway Funeral, Love Has Led Us Astray... all incredible songs.
CE feels like the most aggressive Thursday record but still had some interesting experimentation. It kind of feels like WATT part two in a way. And yeah You Were The Cancer is incredible
They played it at one of the holiday shows back in the day... I wanna say 2010? Thursday is one of a few bands where I really won't attempt to rank albums
Geoff is playing solo kind-of-near-me on Saturday, but I'm afraid he's going to only play his solo material which I don't connect with at all. Thoughts? Edit: actually found this setlist from last year; not too shabby Geoff Rickly Setlist at Maxwell's, Hoboken
Listening to Common Existence (and Thursday) for the first time (I know, I know. I know) and really liking it a lot. Sick drumming, and honestly not what I thought they were going to sound like. Not exactly sure what it is I expected.
last night he played time's arrow, this side of brightness, going to hell (solo song), his cover of usher's climax, turnpike divides, falling bomb, standing on the edge of summer, a song from the no devotion LP, and one more song i didn't know. he talked for probably half the performance, the non music part of the set was pretty fascinating and made it the most worthwhile
weird that you're going to one of their worst records (though still good) first, haha. check out a city by the light divided or no devolucion, their two best p easily imo
I wish I were you right now. No Devolucion, Common Existence and A City By the Light Divided are amazing!
Holy shit, this is one of their worse records? Fuck yeah, haha. I'm alone in my living room rocking the fuck out to this. Can't wait to hear them when they're fully on.
Not everyone agrees with it being one of their worse records. At any rate--you'll probably dig all of their records.
