I need to do a Thursday discography run... I honestly don’t think I’ve heard their last couple of albums since they originally came out haha.
I can see the complaint about the vocal mix on City sort of. I generally like more distinct vocals, BUT it works for me on that record. He’s just part of this whole tempest. It also doesn’t hurt that at various spots he comes soaring through it with some of the best vocals of his entire career (hellooooooooooo “Autumn Leaves Revisited”)
ACbtLD War All The Time Full Collapse Common Existence (I need to spend more time with ND) I got into them because Gerard Way name dropped them in interviews as an influence. I heard Counting and was like...ok. Then I saw the music video for At This Velocity and was hooked.
ND > CE > FC > WATT> City > Waiting It took me a long time to get into WATT and City but after they broke up I was able to appreciate them. I got heavily into Thursday when CE came out and then didn't really "get" ND when it came out but over the years I realized how amazing it was.
"Won't you take me there" is like a career topping vocal. If I ever decided to get another tattoo it would be related to that song
Streaks in the Sky and Dying in New Brunswick are my standouts ACbtLD FC ND WATT CE Waiting Honestly the 3-4-5 places hurt because Common Existence has my actual favorite Thursday song lol, so those can flip back and forth depending on my mood
I first heard Thursday while driving in my friend’s car my senior year of high school in 2002. He was into much heavier music than I as I wasn’t into anything whatsoever with screaming. But when I heard Full Collapse, I just really appreciated the rawness to it. It just seemed really genuine and earnest and nothing like I’ve ever heard before. Picked up FC and Waiting the next day and haven’t looked back since. ACBTLD FC WATT CE ND W Not going to lie, it took years for ND to click for me, but once it did I’ve really come to love it. Honestly, depending on the day, or my mood, WATT, CE and ND are all interchangeable in my rankings.
WATT is easily my favorite, but FC, ACBTLD, and ND all jockey for 2-5 depending on whether I’m weighing nostalgia or “quality.” fun fact I have “war all the time. feels like we’re in love.” over the subway map from City’s album art tattooed.
yeah I'll take the tradeoff of the band sounding absolutely fucking massive even if it means geoff gets lost in the mix a bit at times
Here’s the thing about “Counting 5-4-3-2-1”: 1. It’s great 2. It’s not the best song on the album 3. It’s sequenced perfectly after “Other Side of the Crash” 4. For all the bitching, it was an effective single. I know like 3 girls who got into them after they heard that song.
The combination of legitimate ferocity, really complex arrangements and writing, and melodies I can sing you right off the top of my head is in a perfect balance on City
YES! That organ sound is godly. Seeing them close the show with that one live while they were touring City is such an indelible concert memory for me.
