Everything about Geoffs performance on it says rushed to me, very steam of consciousness lyrics, desperate sounding vocals, etc.
It's weird, when I first started listening to them I would have definitely put WATT over FC. But nowadays I've grown to appreciate FC more. Still love all of their albums though.
As much as I love FC, Wind Up is still a bad song and Paris in Flames is vastly overrated. Rest is pretty much gold tho
Tbh vocals remind me heavily of the Cure and the Smiths in a lot of ways which makes me think that the delivery and vocal melodies aren't an accident bc Geoff loves those bands. His melodies are definitely weird, going into strange places and combined with the lyrics come off as both fragmented and just sort of allowed to be weird but I honestly believe that was intentional. I think he just got better at it through time. But I'm in agreement that it /sounds/ rushed a lot of the time if you compare it to where they'd go.
I can agree with that, Robert Smith def sounds like he's running out of breath for his delivery sometimes but yeah, it for sure works. I remember reading a thing where Geoff thought there was a heavy goth rock influence to Watt and I was super confused til I started listening to the Cure more often haha
yep hes said good things about that wave of post hardcore/emo bands. glad he chooses to see the good in what hes inspired instead of some other artists cough get up kids cough
Yeah I'm sure when I heard the album at 13 I didn't catch that at all, but it's so breathy and I guess that's goth.
I think if you combine them w the Smiths, there's def a reasonable argument to be made there Re: the get up kids, Matt Pryor's anti emo thing is really weird, sometimes condescending, and a big reason it took me so long to listen to them (I loved bands they would trash)
The Cure, The Smiths, and Nirvana seem to have the biggest influence just going purely based of bands that have mentioned them by name or covered their songs. Thursday, Cursive, Rise Against, Circa Survive, MCR, ETID, Bayside, The Early November, FOB, TBS, the list goes on yeah idk why Matt and even some of the other guys are so against the scene they were integral to. like yeah sure some shit bands have popped up but theres been a lot of great bands like the ones mentioned above
This reminded me that Thursday's last recorded/released song was a cover of Rape Me. Nirvana is so heavily wrapped as an influence in this scene but also for Thursday specifically with FC and WATT. I feel like given enough time, Modest Mouse will probably join those three as biggest influences, if they haven't already Also a lot of those bands are just as good as or better than tguk imo, truly frustrating to see someone as influential as them posture like that this was the big thing for me. I love TEN and that suing them thing seemed so asinine. What was there to gain from that?
I don't know the specifics, but I'm pretty sure it was mostly the label pushing them to do it. It got dropped quickly I believe and ace and Matt, at least, are friends now
Well, that is good to hear at least. Water under the bridge etc. Emo/post hardcore bands of a certain era just can't catch a break with the way their musical heroes view them. I do think Thursday maybe has it the worst in that regard, from the way they/Geoff talk about it
one of the most headass things to ever happen in this scene i love that video of TEN live where some kid from the back yells "FUCK THE GET UP KIDS" and Ace is like "no i still like them" and Joe can be heard in the background going "haha yeah!"
