I think if you take it off Beggars though you weaken the album as its one of 3.........well, heavier and upbeat songs (not that its really heavy).
Beggars is one of those songs I don't go and listen to the studio version very much, but I'm also bummed if I don't hear it live at a show.
One song off the album that I don't think gets very much love is The Great Exchange. I also think its the only one that has never been played live either.
I have a hard time picking a favorite song off Beggars, because the whole album is just so cohesive and flows so well. Any time I want to listen to something from it, I usually just listen to the whole album.
I think the stretch between Double Speak, In Exile and At the Last is my favorite, but you are correct it flows very well.
Start it slow, let people know they're in for a different sort of thrice album, and then it builds up at the end and leads into a heavier song
Yeah that ending is pretty fantastic, well the whole song is. I could see it. Circles into At the Last?
There is something to the "opening softer into an explosion" thing though. I saw Thrice on their tour with Manchester (before the tour was cancelled due to Dustin's dad passing away) and they opened with For Miles and then led into The Messenger. Pretty great.
The Thrice farewell setlist is still the best and only time I've seen them. They played so many songs that night: Thrice Setlist at The Fillmore Detroit, Detroit
Their farewell set was a thing of beauty. Such a good mix of songs. The very last one they played where they did a 3 hour set with no openers.....that would have been a crazy one to see.
Honestly though, their most recent set is my fav out of all the times I've seen them though. They still sounded great, all my favorite TBEITN songs sounded perfect and all my favs like For Miles, Daedalus, Yellowbelly and Deadbolt were played.
Just looked that set up... wow. I was a casual Thrice fan from Orange County at the time so I didn't look into getting tickets to any of those farewell shows, but there's no chance I miss a Thrice show now. Next week in Anaheim will be my fifth time since they've returned.
