I don't know if anyone here has any hate of either of them, just prefer one sound over another? It's because this band does so many sounds so well. I think overall M/M is looked down on as one of their worst albums, but I'd always place it somewhere in the middle.
Why on Earth do some people hate these albums? To be honest, TBEITBN is currently my favorite Thrice record.
I think if Illusion had been my introduction to the band, I would hold it in higher esteem, but I'm just way more into their output from Vheissu onwards. I got into them when Artist came out but I didn't hear Illusion as a whole until much later. Plus, Dustin's writing is my favorite thing about the band, and he just keeps getting better imo.
This pretty much describes my viewpoint on the band. I hold all of their releases in high esteem, but I put Illusion above the last two because it was one of the first punk/hardcore/metal type records that I really got into after a middle school listening period filled with shit like Creed. It drastically altered the course of the music that I listen to and sent me down the dark path that has me listening to grindcore and black metal nowadays. I know some of their newer releases like TBEITBN and M/M might be a little bit better critically, but Illusion is so influential to me that I rank it above them. With all that being said, the stretch between Vheissu/Alchemy/Beggars are still my favorite Thrice releases as a whole. Those three records can't be topped...probably.
MM is my least favorite "modern thrice record" by a very large margin. Don't know exactly why, but not a fan whatsoever. Kind of upsetting really
I'm the same way, I can't place exactly what it is, but it's in a totally in different (lower) league than all their others
I think the songwriting on it is just their weakest since Illusion/Artist. There are some great songs on there (Yellow Belly, Words In The Water, Anthology), but there are some weaker songs that really just pass right by me every time (Blinded, Treading Paper, Listen Through Me). I understand the complaint to the lyrics too
M/M is underrated. Blinded is one of the best Thrice songs (even though it could probably fit on one of Dustin's solo releases).
Yellow Belly is one of their best openers, I like it quite a bit more than All the World Is Mad (Beggars is my favorite tho)
I like Yellowbelly more if I had to rank, but All The World is Mad is so good live. Maybe one of their best live songs IMO.
Ah. As for reasons people listed about the middle of the album slowing down, I can see why people aren't too hot on M/M. I'd still say it has some of their best songs on it as well.
Agreed. Yellow Belly is arguably their best opener in my book. All The World is Mad isn't bad, but it's part of what holds Beggars back from being my favorite record of theirs. I enjoy half of your posts.
All The World Is Made rules so hard. The rhythm that songs has is fantastic. Really interesting song on that album compared to some others on Beggars and especially on M/M
What hurts the song for me is the chorus. There's just something to it that I'm not crazy about. The song does have some great parts though.
