Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I doubt 2021 attendance numbers are indicative of much.

Yea, I don’t think judging attendance by 2021 shows says much. I started coming to shows in June 2022 and all the shows I’ve gone to in Orlando, St Pete, Charlotte, and Pittsburgh have all been packed basically.

That's fair, but this was in Dallas, where people were ignoring Covid from day one. Albeit, Thrice fans are probably generally a little more conscientious. I do think the demand for this tour is a lot greater than the 2021 tour, I just think the difficulty to get tickets isn't proportional to the number of people that actually were trying to buy tickets (they planned on using as an attendee) immediately at the the time of on-sale.

These are very small venues too, right? at least Philly is!

  5. The venue in STL is definitely much smaller than I would expect them to play

I can't get over how good Wax 2.0 is. I haven't stopped replaying that one.

I know we’ve carefully avoided ranking in here, but as a relatively new Thrice fan, I think it would actually be helpful for me!

If you’re talking album rankings, I think it would depend on which albums you’ve listened to and what you’re interested in moving forward. I think their sound can be broken down into three different eras.

But I also thinking moving forward from The Artist in the Ambulance would be a good trajectory, then coming back around for The Illusion or Safety and Identity Crisis.

I bought Major/Minor in 2011 because AP.net convinced me to. I really only liked Yellow Belly, but I revisited that album the other day and wow there’s some great shit on there. Cataracts kinda blew me away.

I’ve also given all their post-hiatus albums a try and always find 1-2 songs that I dig, but I feel like the rest eludes me and I just wish it didn’t!

M/M is p tight. It’s not in my top five, but it’s still a good one. I would check out Beggars if you like M/M. Beggars was their first “album” that found them really moving away from much of their post-hardcore sound and in favor of an alternative rock style. It’s more mellow and atmospheric contrasted with M/M.

I would also check out The Artist in the Ambulance and Vheissu if you haven’t already. They’re both fan favorites and the band has already done an anniversary tour for Vheissu and now is obviously about to do one for TAITA. TAITA is straight up post hardcore bangers whereas Vheissu maintains some of that post hardcore sound but also finds them experimenting with keyboards/synths and atmospheric textures. Vheissu essentially hints at what is to come.

I think alchemy is probably their best too.

I would always recommend Vheissu to anyone just trying to get into the band. It’ll give you a pretty good sense of the bands vibe, covering some of the qualities of their older sound and the sound they would build off.

Eh… their most ambitious, sure. But best? Eh.

24 tracks spilt into quarters with very different approaches. Interesting. But as a project to listen to, it’s a bit too long and the abrupt changes don’t help it feel like they belong together. I think each EP is good to great. And find it far more satisfying to view them as EP’s vs one long album. Each EP is a tight six songs that were crafted very intentionally to go together. But it’s hard for me to throw all 4 together and say it’s the best when it’s too long and has no consistency between the EP’s. Which is by design of course, but it just puts me off from listening to the entire thing.

I would listen every Thrice album before picking Alchemy. Maybe not Identity Crisis. I think songs like Firebreather, The Messenger, Daedalus, The Whaler, Come All You Weary, Burn the Fleet, Digital Sea, Open Water, Moving Mountains, and Child of Dust are all incredible songs. But as a whole project to listen to in one go? I’ll take the shorter albums or choose one EP to listen to.

Their best albums are Vheissu and Beggars. Followed closet by the rest.

I just think they were at the peak of their powers with TAI. All four EP’s are perfect on their own and the project as a whole rules—love how each EP is bookended by a sonnet written in the POV of each element—and the experimentation feels natural coming off previous albums’ styles, while daring enough to explore sounds typically unexpected for this band. You’d think a progressive conceptual sort of project like that would come off contrived but it doesn’t at all. I also disagree about the consistency. Water flows perfectly as a dreamy, atmospheric relief after the gazey heaviness of the Fire EP, and Air is a great juxtaposition to Earth. I don’t think you could shuffle all the songs but there’s a progression in the tracklisting that somehow makes it work for me.

    Vheissu
    Beggars
    TAITA/Revisited
    Alchemy
    Horizons/East
    Illusion
    TBEITBN
    Palms
    M/m
    Identity Crisis

Those middle 5 after Artist are pretty interchangeable for me and could rotate on any given day.

M/m is a great EP worth of songs, a bunch of duds, and a killer “bonus track” (Anthology).

And IC is a good debut with a couple awesome songs, but far from the band they grew into.
