if furnace sells daily tickets, i'm down for friday. mostly for thrice and crossfaith. i'm already off that week, so i can make it happen.
Is anybody in here a member of their alliance community? If so, can someone tell me about it? I’m considering signing up for it, but I think wonder about how active it is and if the exclusive content is worth it. For what it’s worth, I play drums, so the idea of Riley chatting about drums and sharing setups or playthroughs is enticing, but idk how often he shares stuff like that
I am. It's okay tbh. Thrice is my favorite band so I am happy to support. You get fairly regularly song breakdowns (right now they have been going through all the songs on Horizons/East). There were some cool behind the scenes vids for recording H/E. I wouldn't say it's the best patreon-type thing, but I am enjoying it. The exclusive variant and merch discounts are nice too. They just did an AMA on their discord on Tuesday which was fun.
I’m thinking of trying it out mostly for the summer and re-evaluating after a couple months. The only patreon I’m a member of is Circa Survive’s and I’m currently paying $25/month for it. They’re my favorite band so it’s not a big deal to me at all and they were crunching out some great content for a while before understandably taking a break recently, but that’s kind of my standard now for other patreon content, whether that’s fair or not I really appreciate the insight. Thank you very much
Dustin responded to a question about H/W although it was vague and confusing. He mentioned they were in the studio recording something that was not for H/W and that he couldn't go into any more details. He then answered the second part of the question regarding timeline for H/W and he said next year sometime. But many on the discord were confused as to if he meant H/W would be out next year, or this secret project their currently working. So all in all, no concrete information. But exciting that they are working on another project. Not sure if that is being worked on before they work on H/W tho.
The old “Ask me anything” and I’ll answer what I can. I’ve hd the belief or impression that they were going to re-work previously released songs for a while now. I was actually very pleasantly surprised that did a new album with Horizons/East, and even more pleasantly surprised when it was confirmed that there would eventually be a Horizons/West. I was starting to wonder if it would drop late 2022 so there wouldn’t be a gap if the albums were meant to be opposite or running theme/vibe. Guess we’ll see. Thanks
The real confusing part for me was when asked about the direction of HE v HW, Dustin said we won’t know until we are making it.. I thought HW was pretty much done.. lol makes me wonder if they strapped what they did.
Has Dustin ever directly addressed why he joined Mars Hill? I know he ended up doing the right thing in the end, but it just seemed so out of character.
I don’t know if has said anything. But if you listen to Beggars and know Mark Driscoll, you would know that at the heart of what he preached was exactly what Beggars was about. I certainly won’t defend Driscoll on everything. But one thing he had, from a purely biblical perspective, was an intensely biblically accurate gospel message and did not ever away from harder passages when preaching. Obviously he made bad calls along the way and he was forever out/quit whatever it was. I’m not really a Christian anymore, but Driscoll’s preaching was incredible, especially when he toned down the yelling to focus on the teaching. Even more so when at that time, a lot of famous pastors basically watered down the gospel or taught moralistic therapeutic deism disguised as the gospel. If you wanted a Bible driven message, Driscoll was a go to example during those years. They also crossed paths years prior to his joining. Mark interviewed Dustin at one point about being a Christian in the band lifestyle. Not sure if it’s still available. I have a feeling most of that content is long gone.
From what I can tell it wasn't just Mark's behavior that was problematic. He had some very backward views on gender roles, masculinity, homosexuality, among other things. Dustin has always seemed to hold pretty progressive views, at least socially, so it was surprising that he would want to associate with Driscoll's view of things. I know Mars Hill was pretty hip at the time in the Christian rock scene, but looking back it's kind of surprising how influential they were. Anyway, Dustin seems to have taken a complete 180 from there anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter at this point.
I remember those interviews! Unsurprisingly, I couldn't find the Dustin interview, but I found one that was in the same room/style as the Dustin one, and then I came across a Mars Hill youtube channel that still has a bunch of Dustin solo songs and how-to guitar videos.
From listening to the Bad Christian podcast through the years, Mars Hill was a very popular church for former T&N band people that grew up with very evangelical upbringings and just other people in the scene too
