I think as a return album...safe is ok. It was like any reminder of how awesome they are. Big fan of TBEITBN.
My problem with Palms is that even compared to their other later output there's very little going on under the hood. There are still parts of Beggars and MM I'm discovering or developing new appreciation for even though I've been listening for years. TBEITBN less so but the songwriting is stronger imo. Palms I feel like I heard everything the album has to offer after only a couple listens
Vheissu was incredibly well received and the band didn't just make Vheissu 2. And they've never returned to their much beloved Deadbolt-era. Thrice has never struck me as a band that factored in fan sentiment when determining what direction to go. Also, I adore Palms.
I don't know if they'll ever top Beggars and Major/Minor for me, and I'm content with that. TBEITBN does have sublime production, just so crisp and crunchy (and I don't even care that this sentence also made me hungry).
I said this in the circa thread but same applies here - I think this band could nail an album that's barely even considered "rock"
Started listening will Illusion, but my favourite albums were when they shifted. Vheissu was just so impressive and defined their future. Beggars has a groove and sounds so rich and layered. TBE is one of the best comeback records you could ask for (also see Yellowcard). I just wonder if a shift in beliefs or all the changes in the world may cause another shift. I found Major/Minor and Palms just followed suit with their predecessor a bit. Both have some great songs, but as whole not as strong as the previous album for me.
Man, I don’t get what people see in TBE. Aside from Hurricane, the Window, and maybe the Long Defeat, there nothing really there that I would ever return to. It’s lower tier Thrice for me.
I could go on and on as well. Don’t tempt us hahaha. I think they captured a lot of their strengths on that record. Coming back that can be hard. Sometimes on breaks artists can try and take what they did outside the band and try and force it back. They just came back and did Thrice. Also sounded great production wise.
There are some really strong songs on Palms and the EP but as a whole, the 'misses' on the album don't have me coming back that often.
I finally spent some actual time with The Artist in the Ambulance recently and I love it. Probably my second favourite of theirs after Vheissu.
