The vocals and the focus on melody. I guess the structure of the songs as well, I prefer simpler structures. Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Outro type stuff.
I listened to the Black EP a very very long time ago. I guess they didn't stick with me but that doesn't mean they won't now. Which colors would you recommend?
Interesting. Yeah, that's a heavier album in the riffs ... so something like A Wilhelm Scream, which is punkier probably isn't the right recommendation ... but it's got a great melody to riff ratio. Have you listened to that new Grayhaven album? That's got some cool metal-like sounds on it from a heavier perspective: The new one from Vein's pretty heavy too: There's also things like Botch, Converge, and Dillinger Escape Plan that may be more toward the sound you're looking for. (I also love the new Hopesfall album, which is heavy in places too.)
Throwing a few out there that might be up the alley you're looking for: Cave In (Eddie's cited them as a BIG influence on his bass playing) Torche Isis (the band - not the terrorist group) Pelican Cult of Luna
I’d recommend Kowloon Walled City if you’re into raw sludgy stuff. Riley does a podcast with their bassist and some of their members are in Less Art.
i think we’re at the point on a music website where we don’t have to clarify if we’re talking about a terrorist group or a band.
changing their name doesn’t mean that hearing their name on a music forum makes you think “oh maybe he’s referring to the terrorist group and not the band” lol. that’s ridiculous
Time to spread the gospel yet again... Deftones are a great gateway into heavier music along the lines you are looking for. Wouldn't be surprised to learn they were a huge influence on Thrice. I hear it all over Vheissu. Gonna double down on ISIS as well. Vocals may take some getting used to, but Panopticon is a perfect record in my opinion.
Love seeing the Less Art recommendations in this thread. Not sure a lyric has spoken to me more recently than Mike screaming "So let us move away and die of old age, with our dogs"
