I think maybe I'm the toad (I saw the comment before it was deleted). I just want to apologize for my post you were (I think) referring to. There's enough antagonism without me contributing to it. I didn't really think it through before posting, so all I can say is... my bad. Is your username a Circa reference? That Circa / Thrice tour last year was like a dream lineup.
My biggest criticism of TBEITBN is how straightforward it is lyrically. This is also reflected in the song titles, you can almost tell exactly what the song is about by looking at the title. I don't get that same feeling looking over the titles for Pines. I'm cautiously optimistic Dustin will be a bit less literal on this one. Bonus: if the music is a bit more experimental as well, which I have a strong feeling it will be based on some Instagram posts.
I know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I remember the other day people making fun of "butt rock" and Stone Sour made the list. Been listening to Alchemy lately, and I feel like Thrice has at least one song that remind me of them. Come All You Weary, one of my favorites, kind of reminds me of songs like Bother by Stone Sour. *Ducks and hides*
Ok I’ll be nice, and say Seether can be tolerable. Shinedown though are soooo bad, and it still makes me mad they named their album Diamond Eyes after Deftones already had theirs out. Let’s be creative guys cmon
You knew Black Honey was a metaphor for American foreign policy based on the song title? I prefer to think of TBEITBN as one amazing return from hiatus record. Plus the sound/production/vocals etc are all a perfect match to Thrice. I get ‘Palms’ may experiment more, but you’d expect something like that on a follow up. Also, song titles do often reflect the nature of the song. Some bands like to just go random and unrelated, but that doesn’t feel like Thrice-y/Dustin thing to do.
I forgot that was the only song on the album. I apologize. Why didn't you mention Whistleblower, Blood on the Sand, Death from Above, Stay with Me, or Wake Up? They might not be overtly literal by themselves, but given to very literal lyrics it feels that way. I can enjoy and appreciate what TBEITBN did for their career, but still concede it wasn't what I was hoping for. Still, it's a solid record. I'm not sure why you'd expect people who've been on a hiatus to be less experimental. I feel like the opposite is probably more true. There's a middle ground between being to literal and being random. I think you know this. I prefer the titles to be a bit more vague but still alluding to the topic of the song. Is that okay with you? I'm curious how you feel about Stay With Me?
stay with me is a great song, the chorus is super straight ahead but those verses and prechorus are gold
But they don't have an album named Diamond Eyes. Only a song that was on the soundtrack to The Expendables and that movie came out like a month after the Deftones album, so the song was probably written before the Deftones album was announced.
I feel that when a band goes on their hiatus and work on different projects, that’s the time to experiment. When you return to th band, you reintroduce yourself as the same band (and it’s different from you were doing before). Then the second album after hiatus you can mix your traditional sound with what you discovered on your side projects during hiatus. Also, death from above doesn’t instantly mean oh this song is about drone pilots. Again, I don’t think bands need to fool you about the content of the song by making up a crazy title.
I think there’s no shame in Dustin in being perhaps more straightforward in his lyrics on TBEITBN. Given the current political climate, I’m sure Dustin wanted it to be clear what his views were on the world. He was defending some of his lyrics quite often on Twitter when the album first released
I always thought being so straightforward lyrically was a form of experimentation for him? It’s certainly out of the ordinary, at least within this project, and I’m sure it took him out of his comfort zone.
If you heard any of his religious music released between the hiatus it was very straight forward. I honestly don’t care if it’s straight forward, cryptic, whatever he wants to do, as long as it’s good.
I was just playing Carry The Fire during the weekend. There's Something Dark is lowkey one of my favorite songs involving Dustin Kensrue.
Any RIYL's for the Fire EP? I really love Thrice's brand of metal music, especially on the Fire EP, but have a tougher time getting into other heavier music. I listened to the most recent album from Every Time I Die a few times based on rec's in here but it hasn't really stuck with me yet
Yea that EP is perfect. Which is why it’s so hard to find something similar. Great works of art are hard to replicate.
