I've been listening to almost nothing but Thrice ever since The Grey came out. I've been listening to them for a long time but I think I just recently realized they might be my favorite band. I saw them for the first time in 2016 and I plan on seeing them again this year. I've recently come around on Identity Crisis, an album I never gave much of a chance because it sounded so different from their eventual sound. That album has some fantastic tracks on it. Unquestioned Answers gives me some serious La Dispute vibes at the end of it.
Thrice has been my fav band since my brother played IoS back in 2002. Actually spurred my love for music. They are the only band I know all the members name of to be honest, lol.
The first time i heard “the melting point of wax” was by some cover band at my high school back in 2004 when i was in 8th grade. I don’t think i even knew who thrice was but the song stuck with me. 3 years later when i first listened to Artist, i put it together.
The first time I ever heard if Thrice was in 2006/2007 when a friend gave me a mixtape with Deadbolt on it. The song never really grabbed me at the time. Ended up buying Beggars in 2009 because I kept hearing great things about it. I enjoyed a handful of songs, but couldn't really get into it as a whole yet. It wasn't until January 2010 when a friend at the time gave me a mixtape of a bunch of songs from Dance Gavin Dance and A Skylit Drive along with some Thrice songs. She was excited to hear what I thought, but the CD was fucked up I guess and only the first four songs made it on: two DGD songs, one ASD song, and the acoustic version of Trust. I was hooked instantly. When she asked me what I thought of the few songs I could upload I was like "I didn't really care for the other songs, but this Thrice song is amazing." She was a bit disappointed because I guess she liked the other two more. Anyway, I soon splurged at my local FYE and bought TAITA, Vheissu, and Fire/Water. I was floored by my first listen to TAITA. Went back to Beggars soon after and fell in love with that too. The rest is history. I love this band so much.
I first heard All That’s Left on an old Madden game but I didn’t get into Thrice until a few years later. The drummer in my middle school jazz band would always play Silhouette to warm up and he sent me The Artist in the Ambulance over AIM.
Identity Crisis, local record store in 2000. Saw them play a community center benefit not long after that.
ive told this story like a million times but i saw them open on the rise against/alkaline trio tour in 2008. i had heard of them here and there but had never heard a song by them before that night. i left a bigger fan of them than any other band on the bill. still holds true to this day, and i used to love rise against and alkaline trio. their live show was just a spectacle, it was intense dustin had the most commanding stage presence their songs were fucking huge and the riffs were out of this world. i was only 16 and super into, well a lot of different music in the scene, but i was pretty deep into my metalcore phase worshipping bands like a7x, atreyu, bullet for my valentine, and thrice blew all of them out of the water. i couldn't wait to go home and download all of their music, and once i came across blood clots and black holes i instantly recognized that insane riff from the show and its been my favorite thrice song ever since
Same tour that got me into The Gaslight Anthem. I remember Thrice playing Helter Skelter and my 15 year old self losing my shit. Pretty sure it’s still the only time I’ve seen them play Blood Clots and Black Holes.
An Amazon review for Relient K's excellent Forget and Not Slow Down referenced Beggars as "2009's other best album". After giving it a spin, I tried Vheissu next, and that was that.
i found gaslight to be horribly boring that tour lol their set sounded like one long boring plodding song to my 16 year old ears. i eventually grew to like their first three albums a fucking lot but i haven't liked anything since american slang
beggars was the first album cycle i was a fan of thrice for and the vagrant records watermark leak was the second full album leak i ever downloaded, behind common existence half a year earlier
On the way home from buying Illusion at Tower in 2002, I was driving way too fast with a car full of people. Reason being, we were all mesmerized by what we were hearing. 'Kill Me Quickly' was unlike anything we'd heard at that time. Soon, we heard 'Deadbolt' for the first time, and it was basically a religious experience which prompted me to drive even faster given the tempo. Suddenly, I saw sirens. I couldn't hear them because the record was so loud. The cop approached the passenger side door and asked me, the driver, why I was pulled over. I was brutally honest about what happened and how we were all taken aback by this incredible local band's new record. I even stated the exact speed I was going without being asked. Because of my frankness, I was let off with a warning and a 'thank you' for being so forthcoming. Subsequently, we dubbed the record "The Illusion of Speeding," but it only stuck for a couple years.
My story is boring as hell. Jr year of high school friend said artist in the ambulance was good, I asked for it for Christmas. I got said cd as a Christmas gift.
I didn’t intend to spark an origin story conversation but I’m enjoying these stories The actual way i got into Thrice was by randomly hearing “Burn the Fleet” on my local rock radio station in 07 as like a new song of the week feature. I had heard all their singles by this time but that song led me to check out the rest of Fire/Water, and i was hooked. Looking back it seems kinda weird they played a non-single.
When I was in high school, my brother told me I'd like The Artist in the Ambulance. I listened to it and loved it. Then Beggars came out not long after and I didn't like it (yeah I know) so for a while I only listened to Artist. I think it wasn't until Major/minor came out that I truly dove into their discography and loved the way they evolved their sound through time.
Heard All That's Left in either Madden or NHL 2004? Thought it was cool but didn't listen much after that. Saw there was buzz when Beggars came out, listened to it, thought it was cool but didn't fall in love right away. Checked them out at Bamboozle in like 2011 I think? They debuted Yellow Belly, and then played Of Dust and Nations (which I had never heard before). It was a magical moment and the rest is history.
Heard All That's Left in a Best Buy and bought the CD. Little did I know that they would turn out to be my favorite band.
