Like, the song, the written song. The chorus, primarily, but also the bridge. Not loving Dustin's melodies/lyrics here.
So this is why they played Red Telephone on the Circa tour lol Song is so much better with the official release. Beggars era seems the most comparable to it. Tour lineup is a nice change of pace from La Dispute tours of the last cycle. Looking forward to seeing Teenage Wrist in a venue other than Chain Reaction. At least I don’t have to blow money on tour tickets and a vinyl preorder on the same day.
I'm curious how drastically Kensrue will deviate from the lyrical themes that drew me to Thrice in the first place. The struggle is readily apparent in this single, and as a Christian myself, it hurts to see what the orthodoxy and hurt of the church has done to Dustin's faith, but it's also understandable. I know many don't like Major/minor for the very reason that the lyrics were a bit on the nose, and the band itself was in a weird flux, notable deaths in their families, and with Dustin wanting to settle down with work in the church and a more stable home life. That album was a big pause button on Thrice, but I still adore it, even if it's one of my least favorites. The experience of putting your band on pause for the church, and getting involved in ministry the way he did, is one of the most grueling experiences anyone can put themselves in. Being in ministry myself, I see the grime and the grit of people at their worst, hurt people hurting people. Sometimes, and in Dustin's case this is most certainly true, you can put your whole heart into it and be chewed up and spit out by the worst aspects of organized religion. Just some, ya know, thoughts about things and stuff.
I've always loved the pairing of those two together. One earlier in his career, and hopeful even, and then near ending his career with the task of writing A Grief Observed. Interesting thought pieces to tie to The Grey I think. Also, I'm not a christian but adore Lewis' writing. I think that really attests to his ability.
that "yeah" at 3:18 is so choice didn't love the track on first listen but after a few spins with headphones really liking it. can't wait for an album
Here's some news you've already known for a year and a song you've already heard. Very disappointed that they're slow-playing things. Sorry for the negativity.
The song is just stuck in my head. Love the raw sound of it. When it came to TBEITBN, only songs that still stick with me are "Hurricane" "Black Honey" and "Salt and Shadow", so I do hope this album hits me harder than that. To be fair though I think "Hurricane" and "Salt and Shadow" are top tier Thrice songs even when up against their whole discography. This album should be out late August/Early September right? The tour seems to indicate that at least.
I was a bit lukewarm on this when it was leaked, but listening to it again, its fuckin good. Love this band so much. Liking the art direction for the single as well.
Which is what I do for a living. Vagrant had much better campaigns if the beginning of this campaign is any indication. They've been recording since February; there's no reason why Epitaph couldn't make their announcement then.
The Mars Hill thing was definitely messy, but I think Dustin came out of it more open-minded and more accepting in his faith. He definitely seems more interested in social issues based on recent lyrics and Twitter posts. I'm one of those few people that liked his more overt Christian references, but I can see how he might have shifted his focus to other topics. I think I read somewhere some of the guys in the band weren't super into some of the subject matter.
I’ll be honest, I really hope it’s not an Underoath-esque deviation. I was really turned off by that “oh look at us being edgy” vibe that I got from just their first single. Being aware of Kensrue’s Twitter interactions though, I think he’s struggling with some things, but remaining very wel spoken and respectful of everyone who is engaging him in conversation about it all.
