A double bass pedal can be good when used with restraint, but that's not regularly the case. I still like That Hideous Strength. It's definitely aged, but the song was great at the time and I wouldn't call it laughably bad.
When I heard THS, I thought it was a b-side/demo for IOS. Not bad, but nothing to latch onto. It has nothing on the B-Sides I assume were written for Artist (Eclipse and Motion Isn't Meaning).
If you showed that to someone who didn't know it was Thrice, I don't think they could tell it was Dustin's voice.
Remember when Riley was constantly peppered with double kick questions if the fans got the sense he was ditching it? I love it when it's tastefully done, but it was such a fad back in those days. THRICE used it as well as you could it while still being restrained.
Question/Poll: Would you guys rather have a covers record.... OR A 'Best of' Consisting of Acoustic Arrangements As Well As Clean Guitar/Strings a la MySpace Transmissions?
I tend to like covers more if I like/identify with the original song more. Covers of songs I'm not familiar with I don't usually care for. Related: that 1979 cover is great
I have main two reactions to covers... 1) This is not good. I’m never listening to it again. 2) This is a fun take. I’m never listening to it again.
The acoustic "Deadbolt" from Warped Tour 2003 was awesome. We'd finally get an extended version if they did their "Best of" with this type of arrangement.
