I’ve always deeply connected with Dustin’s lyrics rooted in his faith. I hope there’s more of that on this record than TBEITBN.

I know I’m probably in the minority here.

 

I feel the same, going all the way back to Artist.

 

I have more difficulty connecting with political lyrics. Probably why my favourite tracks on TBEITBN are Stay With Me and Hurricane.

 

i find his social lyrics to be way more engaging

 

I'll never seriously question Dustin's lyrics but it was kinda nice to see him veer away from his usual subjects. That's why he clearly established his two other side projects: to cover those subjects without any pushback. While I don't think this is necessarily true, some people believe his lyrical subjects (no matter how well-written) have kept the band from achieving even greater success. The argument: you're going to alienate some people who don't share your faith-based views. And, after the success of TBEITBN, you can bet that somebody made that correlation internally.

I've always believed that the band's success was capped due to a collapsing industry that tried like hell to turn Thrice's former genre into the next grunge movement (before quickly changing its mind). Obviously, the band wanted no part of the genre they indirectly defined. And, once Island was handed material from a completely different band than the one they signed, they were right back on the indie circuit. Lastly, in 2018, I think an angry, somewhat political Dustin is the best thing for the band. They'll never be U2-level big, but they deserve a bit more of an audience (and the financial benefits that come with it) – especially with 8 kids among the members.

 

i dont think dustin's decision to focus less on religion had anything to do with getting any more popular, theyve never been one to chase the money so to speak, i think hes just at an age where hes been through it all with his faith and he doesnt have much to say that he hasnt said already regarding that topic in thrice, so he uses his other projects to write about that. the thing is that political writing is able to stay interesting over a period of time because the politics of the world are constantly changing. TBEITBN isnt the first time dustin wrote about politics, theres a lot of anti capitalist, anti greed sentiment on artist, but it was the first time it was his main focus and its not hard to gather why. i think he did a great job and they're some of his best lyrics ever.

 

I want a dark, angry, political record with a lot of post-rock/metal influence.

 

I want a few snyths, and some teppei vox.

 

i want a full exploration of the sound on the fire EP

 

I’m really glad they’re on Epitaph, that’s a great label for them honestly. Can’t wait.

 

I like this band, and this thread, and I love all of you.

Also that little guitar lick at the end of Red Sky never gets enough love. Every time I hear it I’m brought back to when I first heard Vheissu.

The end of "Red Sky" is the sound of hope.

 

The Grocery by Manchester Orchestra gives me this exact same feeling

I just noticed Gates is opening for Foo Fighters currently. They were opening for Thrice 2 years ago. Did I miss something?
