I really really like TBEITBN when I'm listening to it, but for some odd reason it doesn't pull me back as often as Beggars or The Alchemy Index. Hope the next one is weird! (I think I say this about every band for what it's worth.)
The record will be out this summer. That timeframe was part of the Epitaph deal. They've been writing on each and every tour since TBEITBN knowing that they have to make the most of their time together. Also: Black Honey is their best single.
I think best single goes to Firebreather or Redsky. Stare at the Sun is pretty classic too but I'd probably put Black Honey over it.
I think the lyrics are really on the nose but some of the track...the window, death from above, hurricane still really pull me in I’d like for him to be a bit more abstract so I can spend more time trying to guess wtf he is writing about. But that’s def 1000% personal preference and not a knock on him.
I find these lyrics to be far less on be nose than anything on major minor. You can actually ascribe your own meaning to some of these songs or any of them if you really want to
It's disturbing how little I revisit Major/minor. I defended it for years, too. According to Wiki... the only singles that qualified for the charts are: Left Moon Invisible Weary Honey Hurricane Or, do we count individual tracks releasd pre-album in these parts?
I heard firebreather on the radio before though and digital sea has a music video. I don't know if that makes them count as singles or not though....
Of those 7 I listed above, 'Weary' is the only one that didn't show up on a chart. "Black Honey" is their top performer which is pretty amazing at this stage in their career.
A key difference between M/m and TBEITBN is song length. 9 M/m songs are over 4 minutes while only 5 TBEITBN songs are over 4 minutes. I wonder if that's a product of piecing parts together via file sharing... or if it was Eric's suggestion.
I think it has more to do with the more pop like song structures of TBETBN. V C V C B C O something along those lines is a formula used in almost song. I don't mind the longer songs on M/m though..
The Alchemy Index seldom pulls me back, not because I don't enjoy them – it's because they're bite-sized.
