Salt and Shadow is definitely my favorite after one time through. This band does so many different styles beautifully. That's what I've always loved. And probably why I may have expected more. If i were them I'd be frustrated deciding which direction to take. I think my issue right now is that personally I have not been that interested in predictable song structure or choruses lately. And i bet these are better live actually
Obviously I live on backward planet in Reverse Town :) Down tempo doesn't mean it's not 'in your face', necessarily. Maybe 'aggressive' is a better word.
And to clarify, I am good with down-tempo. But I feel like this album, while fantastic, is very even. Not a lot of high or low, just a similar pace and tempo throughout. Very chugging.
PS: Listening to the mix on this is another reason I think Brand New shit the bed with their latest single.
I wish I liked Hurricane as much as most people. It's kind of a slog. It pays off but I find myself clicking elsewhere now that I've heard the album all the way through a few times. It sounds like they wanted to write another "Anthology" type track, but with the vibe of an opener. I watched the Hurricane studio video and listened to that initial teaser a thousand times so that probably made a difference.
Anyone feel like there is a similarity in the verses of Wake Up to Doublespeak? Just the way Dustbin sings On the first couple of listens, Hurricane is far superior to Anthology. Though I never really liked Anthology all that much..No dynamic to that song at all.
Extremely happy with the production, I feel like the producer did an excellent job capturing their sound.
Anthology lost its luster to me too. I do hear some Doublespeak in Wake Up. Riley said it's a Colour Revolt type song and he's absolutely right. I like this tune more than most.
I like it too. It's a bit Southern rock, and parts of it are the most un-Thrice-like song i've heard, but that's not a bad thing. (though not sure what that means now considering they've covered a whole lot of genres). I love the Long Defeat. That is one song that will stick with me I think. 100% Agreed. Production is superior to either Beggars or Major/Minor and is the most cohesive sounding album since Vheissu.
In that "External Influence" video, they were talking about how Eric Palmquist encouraged them to pull from their bag of tricks. Salt and Shadow sounds like a result of that given the Water and Air sounds. A little Whaler and Silver Wings in the chorus. Dustin sounds so good on this record. We forget that he blew his voice out during Major/Minor's sessions.
Smashes every album. Most important part of Thrice for me. Drives every song. The more I listen, the more I think the production is just spot on. Despite my wanting a few more mellower songs, the production really brings out all the right parts. This hasn't been the case since the Alchemy Index/Vheissu
Whistleblower, opening groove on Hurricane stick out off the top of my head, but I would say we need moar Ed.
I watched this thread talk about his comments in an interview and I now understand why he might be frustrated. He didn't get a "Cataracts" or "Stand and Feel Your Worth" where the jam is bass-driven.
Yep. He drives the verse of The Long Defeat a bit, but it's a pretty basic line, not a typical Ed groove. He does stand out well in the mix at numerous points, though.
