Thanks for these responses. Helps me temper my hopes a bit. Not sure why I opened up the potential comparison to Water. Definitely wasn't expecting an album like it and I'm not sure I'd ever want one now that I think of it haha.
I'm not digging the two new Thrice songs I've heard at all... They sound way too mainstream alternative radio-ish to me. Not unlike Nickelback and bands like that. I haven't read through this thread at all, but does anyone else feel that way? This isn't the Thrice sound I'm used to...
I feel like Blood On The Sand is the most alt rock radio-ready song they've written possibly ever (not that there's anything wrong with that), but I don't get that vibe from Black Honey. I also don't think these two songs are far from what we got on Major/Minor or even the Fire EP.
I also feel like Thrice has always been in this realm since Vheissu? I heard Image of the Invisible and Red Sky on the radio. You could argue pretty easily they could've had radio singles on every album since Artist.
Yeah, I agree that M/m meets Fire is a great description of these songs. I think we're going to get a lot of Fire guitar tones throughout the rest of the album, if the clips in the background of the in-studio videos are any indication.
I agree with you that they've definitely had singles before that could/have received airplay like the ones you've mentioned, All That's Left, or Stare At The Sun. I just think Blood On The Sand has more accessibility than them. I've never heard Thrice on the radio in the Philly area though so lucky you! I think I read an update somewhere that they're bringing baritone guitars back on this record so I'm pumped for heavy stuff like Fire.
There's a radio station in Tampa that used to be amazing. They played SoCo, Brand New, etc for years. They even played Underoath (because local). Even after I moved I used to listen to it online. I discovered so many bands there and on Fuse.
It's funny because I seem to remember people throwing the "rock radio" thing around when they released "All That's Left" and "Image of the Invisible." That label has a strange habit of following them around. Bummer to hear the atmospheric elements might not be as prevelant as I'd like. But honestly, I can't imagine anything diminishing my excitement for this record.
I guess I only really know Illusion of Safety and Artist in the Ambulance. So the sound of those records compared to these new songs is pretty night and day to me.
I have no idea how the response in this thread is so positive, the singles so far sound like straight butt rock. Like Mudvayne or some shit
What year were you born? UPDATE: Your profile says you're 18 so that means you didn't experience the 90s rock scene. Thus, I now understand why you might make such a statement. And this sounds nothing like Mudvayne.
Damn, well goes to show how little I know about guitars. I stand corrected, thanks for clearing that up hah.
Sonicly, both of these songs wouldn't be out of place on Vheissu... which came out 11 years ago. So I'm not sure where the "sounds like a new band" is coming from.
