What an awesome surprise! Just gave it a full listen and had a smile across my face the entire time. I love the mix and the changes Dustin made to some of the vocals. My only single beef is that while the guest vocals are a cool addition, I wish they would have stood out more. I was waiting for Andy Hull to shine on "Stare At The Sun" and he's mostly just backing vocals like most of the other guests. That said, its still amazing
Enjoying this overall but yeah, some songs definitely work better than others. The title track, always my favourite back in the day, sounds so much less urgent and vibrant here, but some of the heavier tracks sound so much dirtier and beefier (in a good way).
Blasting the HQ steam of this this morning and I feel like I want to run through a wall. This sort of makes me wish they had given IOS a similar treatment, or that they had officially recorded the live shows.
I'm the outlier so far, but no thanks. The original is my favorite Thrice album, by far. I feel like this album purely exists so they can set expectations on their upcoming tour. He can't sing it like it was recorded, so now we have this. I'll probably listen to this once and then never go back.
They've talked about being disappointed with the mix on this album for probably 15 years, so this recording isn't entirely a surprise. They did this because they wanted it to meet what their vision for the album originally was, and definitely not to set expectations for a tour. I personally like some of these versions more, and I like some not quite as much. The good thing is that the original recording still exists, so at the end of the day there's no harm done.
Oh man I love this! But I'm a huge fan of live recordings too. I super dig hearing my favorite songs done slightly different (as lame as that might sound haha).
The heavier tracks definitely benefit from the new recordings/mixing, but I’m surprised that they didn’t take a few more passes at the poppier tracks. There are some rough spots. Still a very solid effort.
They're West Coast. I figure we'll see something later in the day? I also get the impression they wanted to give the Alliance members some time to snag merch.
Just got a bandcamp notification for this. Holy shit, will get on this immediately, just saw comments here go both ways. Either way what a neat idea Edit: this reminds me of the DYI covers they've released over the years, production wise. Sounds like punk rock! Not "better" than the OG but a nice alternative, sounds almost live. Would go crazy for a Illusion version of this, at least of a few songs
Had no idea this was coming, but it makes total sense. I love the OG album and have a lot of great memories tied to it, and with that being said, this is an awesome gift to be able to blast during the work day today. I love the mix so much more on this one and actually appreciate that some of the takes are a little more 'rough' than they could be, makes it feel like a more cohesive/live version of the original. Totally diggin' it
As a side note: it's really cool how loyal the Thrice fanbase is. The fact that their vinyl constantly sells out is so awesome.
I read this wrong way back when they started teasing it and thought it said “reimagined” which led me to believe that the songs would be experimented with. revisited makes much more sense. As I was listening I was like “none of this is really reimagined?” And I let myself down.
I don't see many comments about Dustin's screaming which he hasn't done a ton of on recent records. I was a little worried it would be lacking screaming but nope, sounds fucking perfect.
The guest vocalists are tastefully subtle and they all sound great. Dustin + Chuck Ragan sound real good together.
