Heh, I've listened to it quite a bit. Had a friend listening party at my house for those first two EPs. BBQ and new Thrice over the speakers. Was fun.
Same. I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out what it was about M/m that really grated on me. Because thrice is my favorite band and that record really rubbed me the wrong way. For me, it was Listen Through Me. That song just taints the rest of the record. And it makes every other religious reference seem more abrasive.
I really dig Alchemy, but I do agree. They're EPs. This kind of sums up my feelings on most EPs too. I'm an album listener so it's really frustrating to me to see the recent trend be EP releases instead of fully realized album releases. I understand why it's happening, I just feel like so many bands are losing that sense of intentionality that comes with a more cohesive body of work.
The end of Broken Lungs is among my favorite moments in any of their songs..and I don't think the lyrics are that dumb..
For me it's "Words In the Water" personally, I can do without ever hearing a song with born-again baptism imagery again
Same. I've gone back to that one the least out of all their albums. And I go back to TIOS more than most. I really love that album. Freshman year of college was all about that CD, and I have good memories with it. "Betrayal Is a Symptom" is one of my favorite songs, and lyrical works, of all time. I never really wanted tattoos, but once, I thought about getting, "Faith,is not something that I grasp, it's something that I fake," on me. That line was very me in 2002.
I think the lyrics, on their own, are fine. The issue is more the intent than the lyrics themselves. I've always ignored his intent with that song though (I don't really think it comes through) and used my own interpretation.
I think that perfectly sums up why I've come back to them so infrequently. It's not that they're bad, it's that I want the full experience of Thrice, and that feels lacking if I decide to do a TAI run. I probably won't get all the way through, and maybe I should have them on shuffle, which I hate doing.
I probably go back to the Anthology live album the most, and then from there go to whatever album I'm feeling the songs from the most. Vheissu is still far and away my favorite though. And given the current state of the world/politics I've been going back to Artist a lot too. It's sad how little has changed in 15 years.
Definitely takes parts of what they learned, recording and timing wise, from those albums and incorporates it. Parts of "Circles" and "Wood and Wire" and "We Move Like Swing Sets" and "All the World is Mad" and "At the Last" play with those elements in spots. Part of my point is they move in and out of the songs, instead of being the only part of the song, which I think is what makes them great. Like, let's take "Wood and Wire" from about the 1:30 mark on ... those background sounds and the band being willing to make a song like that at all, I think really comes from playing around with the Water (and Air) recordings in TAI.
I always took a lot of the vibe and flow of Beggars as the best part of something like "Broken Lungs," just done better. Like "Doublespeak" and "Circles."
And I'm in the minority, but I never liked "Yellow Belly," and thought "Promises" was a lesser "The Weight," so that album starts off on a foot that never gets me anywhere. O well.
Sigh. They are sick, they are poor And they die by the thousands and we look away They are wolves at the door And they're not gonna move us or get in our way Cause we don't have the time Here at the top of the world Feeling alright Here at the top of the world We hold our own by keeping our hearts coldYeah.
Mannnn Words in the Water is one of their best songs lol, I am not overly religious, but still love the heck out of it. Listen Through Me grates me about how on the nose it is.
Then I could be in Thrice! I've practiced a ton! The song itself is so incredible though. As a P.O.D., Wolves at the Gate, Skillet and Flyleaf fan though, I've become a pro at ignoring religious lyrics and just enjoyjng the song. Their two live albums are actually my favorites if those count haha. My two most go to albums. Didn't Dustin say that the lyrics to Promises are kinda a sequel to The Weight? It seems like the songs are about the same thing. I always dug the guitar tones on Promises, esp the intro and ending jam. Never liked YB? Not even when it was released as a single months before the album?
strong [2], really weak way to start the album, and Listen Through Me should outright have been scrapped
I love TAI, didn’t think that would have to defend that one. Fire is huge and crushing but I actually love that includes softer moments as well, so dark and ready to explode Water- programming and reverb aside these songs get BIG, they sound huge at times. Air- love how they cut the kids and left low tones and high trebles to create space in the mix. Broken lungs has a great breakdown, the sky is falling is one of my favorite songs on the entire album. Daedalus is one of my favorite thrice songs.. like that song is flat out incredible Earth - love the guitar tone on moving mountains sounds like Dustin is singing right in the room. Pianos are a nice touch. Obviously love come all you weary. Child of dust is the best closer of all the eps.
Fire is the last time we'll ever get a really heavy Thrice again so I cannot imagine their discography without it. They are killing what they are doing now but they were also such an amazing heavy group too.
