I wonder if they take a peek at us every now and then. Perhaps, they're still traumatized by the infamous Thrice message board. But, what if they call Teppei TEPPOW because of us?
Thrice's official site used to have a message board. It was the single greatest (and worst) message board. Those were the days. Anyway, they had to shut it down since it became toxic before too long. I wanna say they shut it down before Artist.
They shut it down after V. That message board hated me so much. They hated V when it came out and hated my review. I got hate mail for months for that one from that place.
in hindsight vheissu shouldnt have been nearly as divisive as it was. extremely natural and logical next step from artist. i think their biggest leap was beggars.
Thrice - Vheissu • chorus.fm (I am very self-conscious about anything I wrote a day later, and this is 13 years later, sooooo ... lol.)
The best word I can use to describe it is cinematic. I always imagined it playing over a movie trailer.
Really? Earth to Beggars seems pretty natural. Artist to Vheissu is a pretty big jump, esp since up to that point they had 3 albums of them just being a hardcore heavier band.
Yes, the change in sound prompted a ton of backlash. A lot of people I knew fell in love with V years later after first taking issue with the genre change. It was truly ahead of its time. But, like you, I was ready for a departure.
Everybody thought they were gonna be the next Metallica (only with their twist on the genre). People came around to V as we know, but it was jarring for a lot kids back then as they weren't quite ready to give up their heavy music craze.
Man i hated this thread during butt rock but I’ll ride for vheissu talk. They talk about the theory of life on other planets as overcoming certain obstacles. Ie when a single cell goes multi cell, or when life gains intelligence. Thrice transcended the scene hurdle with vheissu. If they wouldn’t have had such a shit video (the song itself) in image of the invisible and would have released earth will shake or of dust as the single, it would have been the equivalent of finding water on mars. Also I’m hammered post work event so I apologize in advance for how terrible the above paragraph is.
At the time it felt like a perfect album though and I loved the reference to a perfect movie, described how I felt after my first listen.
I love this review, Jason. One of my favorites. Vheissu is a top 5 album for me and every time I read this I get amped to listen again because it pretty much describes how I feel. Also, my phone kept autocorrecting Vheissu to Crissy and then after doing so three times settled on Verisimilitude.
